I have memories of challenger and 87 Canada cup but I was too young for them to be real. I think it is memories of learning about them later.

First gulf war is for sure a legit memory.

I remember the OJ trial quite clearly but I was 9/10 by then.

As for the first memorable news story... I'd say Pinochet overthrowing a communist president Allende. Still remember it as a huge story.

Although, come to think of it, there were bigger and more dramatic stories that I should have remembered better (i.e. PLO killing 11 athletes at Munich Olympics in 1972, or Nixon meeting Mao), but the Chile story is the one that came to my mind right away when I read the OP.

One of my earliest memories is the Habs winning the cup in 1993. I was 3 years old.

Other than that, I remember when Princess Diana died. Also recall Donovan Bailey and the Canadian Relay team in the 1996 Olympics.

I also vividly recall when Bailey and Johnson had their 150m race at SkyDome. Watched it in CBC, I remember Donovan Baileys interview afterword. He was a chicken.

Did they tip 16%?

God help us if we ask about their video rentals.

One of my most vivid memories as a child was the 1988 summer Olympics when Ben Johnson won the gold medal (I would have been 9). I never remember my mom and dad being overly excited when watching sports on TV but I can vividly remember laying on my stomach in front of the TV while my parent were behind me cheering as loud as I had ever heard them. I don't remember the following days as he was stripped of the gold medal but I remember watching the race and him winning.

Apparently yes, it is.
I remember moon landing vividly, but was only 5.
72 Summit series was amazing as an 8 year old. School stopped so everyone could watch. First 'where were you moment': in truck with my Dad, on way back from Stettler to Drumheller hauling home our new swather, when Henderson scored for Canada.

John Glenn cruising around Earth three times. We stopped the class and listened on the radio.
The next year Kennedy was assassinated and we were sent home from school in the middle of the day.

Agree with a bunch of these. A couple more memories that stick in my mind:

-When Invasion of the Body Snatchers came out, and was rated grossest or bloodiest movie of all time, or something like that. At least, that was the word on the street in my elementary school. Someone had the book with pictures from the movie that haunted me.
-1980 Miracle on Ice (Mike Eruzione!), followed by the boycott of 1980 summer olympics.
-Princess Diana's wedding.

I remember watching the Broadstreet Bullies in the Stanley Cup Finals.

I remember lots from earlier, but off the top of my head nothing that was outside of my personal world.

World Cup Italia 90 would be my first big one. It was Ireland's first time in the tournament and the whole country seemed to be in festival mode.

After that, it would've been the beginning of the Gulf War. My dad called me downstairs one night to show me that war had just begun on TV. I would've been 10 at the time. I watched for a bit, but it didn't mean much to me. I collected stamps at the time, and a few months later I thought it was the coolest thing when I got an Iraqi stamp of Saddam Hussein. I also had a Free Kuwait badge that I also thought was cool, but really I had no idea what any of it meant.

I was 4 years old at the time and still have memories of the Cuban Missle Crisis and how close we came to a nuclear war.
