Right on. I'm all for players being loyal to a team/fanbase.
Good on ya Stammer.

It is interesting how taxes are playing such a big role in a salary cap world.
Wonder if the NHL would ever look at trying to normalize salaries and the salary cap for the locations.
Some teams have a competitive advantage right now because of it.

That's my point! You said "If you think about it, 8x$8.5M is only $2M less than 7x$10M over the term and after taxes are considered he actually comes out ahead." I.e. 8x8.5=68 is only 2 less than 7x10=70
In reality, the comparison is 8.x8.5=68 vs. 7x10=70 + 1xY
I'd be willing to bet that Y is still several million dollars, so over the 8 year term this contract will see him making significantly more than $2M less

Except you're forgetting the significantly more favourable tax rate in Florida.
Remember? Liberal Provincial and Federal Governments with significant tax increases on incomes over $300K?
That savings alone is likely well in excess of $2m + 1xY.

I thought he was going elsewhere for sure because I betted on Yzerman being smart enough to realize after his team went as far as they did without him that signing Stamkos to a huge deal is going to hurt that roster in the near future big time. Too many contracts coming up that will need pay days, I think this was a bad move by TB.

Depends on how many tweets the guy who runs Tavares' hootsuite has liked.

That's a good point. But since the markets with the tax advantage tend to be markets where the NHL is trying to grow the game, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I always thought he'd end up staying in Tampa at the end of the day, but man I was kinda looking forward to the free agent frenzy, and more rumours of meeting with unrelated parties (mayor of TO? President of Canadian Tire?).
Now what are we gonna talk about all summer?

Yup. Kypreos said so on the phone with Kerr today. That's literally the next move of the ShanaPlan™. They hunker down and wait for Tavares.

That's a lot of money and term for a guy who appears to be on the decline. Was kind of hoping he'd become an anchor for the Leafs. Where's TB getting the cap space for this? I thought they were pretty close to the cap...

^ They still have $9.3 million in cap space left after signing Stamkos and the most significant signing left to do is Kucherov.
