I'd rather have "good" bottom 6 players that can actually produce. That's part of what makes them "good". It's also part of what makes them deep.

Like you said, Pittsburgh won because they're deep. They didn't win because a few players had a lot of hits. And they definetely didn't win by wasting valuable cap space on 4th liners.

Don't know where this talk of having no cap space next year is coming from. I think some of you are adding Gaudreau and Monahan in a 2nd time. Here are the contracts for 17/18, along with others that I think are likely:

Gaudreau... $6.75
Monahan.... $6.75 (between the 2, $13.5M should be more than enough)
Frolik......... $4.3
Backlund.... $3.575
Stajan........ $3.125
Bouma....... $2.2
Bennett...... $.925
Tkachuk..... $.925
Pribyl......... $.925
Shinkaruk... $.833
Giordano..... $6.75
Hamilton..... $5.75
Brodie......... $4.65
Jokipakka.... $2.5
Wotherspoon $.8
Elliot........... $6
Ortio........... $1

Total............ $57.76 for 17 players (guessing on the last 4, but the amounts should be reasonably close)

That leaves over $16.2M for 5 more players, assuming a $74M cap. I left out Colborne because I think if Martin were signed, Colborne probably wouldn't be.

You can argue a few of the details one way or the other, but the point is that we are not in cap trouble next year at all. There's room for a Martin if the Flames think he is an improvement.

Edit: I am talking about 2017/18 not this year

I don't mind Martin, but let's put it this way - You can have Hathaway at $690k and that take that $2.5M you're saving and realize that its the difference in contract between guys like Derek Stepan/Patrice Bergeron and Michael Frolik.

The last thing we need to be doing is giving big money to bottom 6 forwards. Let some other team overpay for him.

Bennett's entry level deal ends this year. And that team would need a top 4 defenseman which will be pricey.

Can we grab his teammate too? Another free agent out of long island Id love to add.

Love the idea of Martin, if we made room. Dont re-sign Jooris, bury Bollig, buy out Raymond and I'm on board. Could we keep a contract like to to under 2 mil though? Doubt it. Gotta move some money out too

You are assuming that Bennett will be a 50+ point player next season? I like him, but I don't think we will see that big of an improvement to his game. If he gets that much better that's great, but for now Bennett is a $3-4M player with a lot of potential. I am also aware that Bennett brings a lot of intangibles, but for now he has yet to earn such a hefty raise.

I'd take Martin on my team on a reasonable deal in a hearbeat!

I would love Martin on the Flames - but don't think the Flames will be able to afford him.

He wouldn't be a complete waste, however - he is a fine checking forward, not just a hitter. That has more value than a guy that just bangs around. I still don't think he will come in at a reasonable dollar figure or even term.

I am thinking the Flames are better off sitting out of the UFA sweepstakes this year, or just waiting and picking off the scraps as training camp approaches just to fill whatever hole they feel they have.

The cap space for the season I would bet would be more valuable than whatever UFA the Flames overspend on.

Bennett will have to put up 70+ points to get $5 million or more next year.

If he puts up 50-60 points he will likely get a bridge deal at around $4 million IMO.

That's the disadvantage of burning that 1st year the way he did. If you don't come out of the gate swinging the way Gaudreau did, then you don't jump straight to the big pay day.

Wow

Dennis Bernstein @DennisTFP
Kings will talk with UFA F Matt Martin but with likely $3-4M per price tag, deal isn't feasible

Yeah, $3-4 million is too much. I was on board until that number popped up.

No, he hasn't earned anything yet. But for cap purposes you have to assume he's going to have a good year and be at least in the $4M range off his ELC. Point is, Enoch had him on his entry level in 17/18 in his post.

Maybe not cap trouble, but it's pretty tight. People have mentioned Bennett. Tkachuk and others will have ~3m reasonably achievable bonuses. 10m for 5 players including a decent defesnseman gets tight in a hurry. Tighter if you look another year out and a couple more ELCs are due raises.

Anything is possible but there's not a lot of wiggle room. The flames better choose pretty wisely.

3-4 million? not in an era with salary caps...

Hathaway could potentially be equally good at a third of the cost.

I think the Flames contacted Martin for sure. However I think this was prior to picking up Chiasson, I think they went that route when Martin's price tag was too high.

I hope BT is focusing on improving the team's top 6 more that the bottom 6. Guys like Martin would be good (not at 3M lol) but the team has holes that are more important and need to be addressed. I'm sure BT has "feelers" out on everyone so I'm not too worried. I think the Flames will be linked to every UFA and every team looking to make a deal. These next few days are going to be fun!
