The advantage to communities like Auburn, Mackenzie towne, copperfield, Mahogany is that you now have Deerfoot or the ring road to get around. Even Macleod is five minutes away if you want. If you don't work downtown or start at 8am then rush hour probably won't affect you much. If you do then that's what the lrt is for. Get on the ring road and hop on the lrt.

Why anybody would want a huge yard is beyond me. It's just more maintenance if you ask me. Maybe it adds a bit of privacy.

The shopping setup at 130th I avoid. It's a good example of how not to design a walkable outdoor mall. All that happens in outdoor malls is people drive from store to store. Seton and Deerfoot can have all my buissness.

What are house prices in Ramsay and Inglewood like these days? Those are probably the two most desirable SE neighbourhoods imp. The rest sound like they kind of suck, frankly.

Quick look on some realtor sites has SFH in Inglewood starting around the $500K range for something the size of a small pantry, unrenovated.

Paying so much for inner city living is something I'll never understand.

Probably because you've never lived there.

I've lived in both the burbs and inner city and I can't imagine ever living further out than Glenmore.

I have a large, south-facing backyard with several leafy trees, an expansive lawn, a deck, a garden, a chain link fence and field behind, and no visible neighbours. In the warm months, I spend many hours a week back there, pretending the rest of the world doesn't exist. Basking in the sun, drinking beer, reading, and listening to the rustling of the leaves. I sometimes muse on the fact that people go on vacation and travel a long way to enjoy a week or so in such an agreeable environment.

And I don't have an expensive house. It's just a largish plot in an older neighbourhood. You couldn't pay me to live in a neighbourhood where the houses are pushed up against each other and you can see all the yards up and down the back of the houses. I need the outdoors and I need privacy.

You sound like me. Other than the yard opening onto a field, I've got an alley. Otherwise, you described my land.

trespassing on Altalink right of ways and native land to hang out on a sunny, private, river silt beach is my preferred cheapo vacation method

I really wish I could live down south. These house prices are unreal.

Instead, we continue to search for CliffFletcher's paradise a reasonable distance from downtown...

Lots of them, you just have to accept you will get a house that needs some work, and isn't 2400 sq ft.

That's the problem, as there are so many houses with decent lots that are taken up by huge houses. I would much rather have a big yard and a smaller home. I guess most people think differently.

I was really hoping this thread would devolve into an inner city vs suburbs argument.

Totally opinion. I would never live inner city again. I could totally explain if you like but i don't want to turn this into a inner city vs suburb thread.

Different phases of life. Grew up in the suburbs - loved it. Lived inner city as a student then as a newly wed - loved it. Moved to the suburbs and had a family - loving it. Could move back to the inner city as an elderly widower someday - would probably love it.

There is no wrong preference.

100% opinion. Keeping in mind I don't live in a small condo or a townhouse. I live in a smaller home in a community my family loves....so it's all preference.
