Two small super skilled players would be exciting for the fans no doubt. But in an ideal world you have as few small players as possible and surround them with big, strong, skilled players. That makes your team harder to check, harder to contain, harder to prevent going to the net, etc. Now with a top 6 pick we have a great chance to add a big, strong skilled player to surround Johnny Hockey with.
So on the one hand we could add a big, strong skilled forward to make us harder to play against and help offset Johnny's size OR we could take another average to small size super skilled player which makes us harder to play against at home and on the powerplay but easier to shut down on the road and in the tighter checking, more physical playoffs.
The latter option is arguably more exciting for fans but the former option may be the best choice for building an ideal perennial contender.

Might seem like a lot but I think Laine is going to be a bigger superstar in the NHL then Matthews and the fact he's a RHS just screams need for the flames.

If the flames won the lottery last night, would you want to trade the pick for that package?

I get what you are saying. Trust me I am not of the strong opinion either way. No one small player max is my assessment. Have two or three small amazing playmakers would be awesome.
I just don't see Nylander as a 6th pick overall. After the first 5 picks none of the players are worth the 6th pick. Or all of them are.
Of course I want size. Yet its such a crapshoot. One could argue Keller is amazing too. Small though. Do I pick him 6th? No. 8th or 9th, no issues. Just how I feel about Nylander too.
We can drop back in the draft and still get a good player.
There is just no clear cut top sixth pick in my mind. Granted if Vancouver or Edmonton take a dman the choice is made for us.

#6 (Nylander?) + #27-30 (Laberge/DeBrincat/Stanley etc) + Kylington/Shinkaruk/Mangiapane/Andersson + Backlund.
I'm not sure what the Jets comparable would be...
#6 + #27-30 + Morrissey/Petan/Armia (?) + Stafford for #2. That would certainly give me something to think about.

Sure a lot of "Boy, lots of people voted Nylander, they must be casual sheep" attitudes. We need a winger, Dubois and Tkachuk aren't poll options and the rest of the top 10 consists of 3 defensemen and a center, two positions we're already deep at. Nylander is a highly skilled right handed winger, he's the obvious choice for 6th overall based on what we need and based on the poll options
If Dubois and Tkachuk are gone before our pick, I'd rather trade down and get a Gauthier or a Jones, but that wasn't the question asked

Yes, I would. I dont think the Jet's are in need of a big RHS RW upfront immediately as MUCH AS the FLAMES

Out of the choices there, provided Tkachuk and Dubois are gone I'd go with Nylander, Chychrun or Bean. I really don't want Nylander but he's the best offensive guy if Tkachuk and Dubois are gone (I hear Jost is a "wildcard" pick but i dont know enought about hIm and most scouts say he is more lIke a 12 overall pick and not 6th overall). Chychrun would be good and of course sentimental pick would be Jake Bean with him being a Calgary boy and playing for the Hitmen. 6th overall would be a little high to take Bean but really if Tkachuk and Dubois were off the board I'd be ok looking at trading our #6 away for say something like 10-12 overall provided we got a decent player/prospect in return and the we could draft Jake Bean. Bean is a little small, I believe 6' 175lbs or so but if he could fill out to 200lb-210lb he would be ok then. The guy can skate great and is a great stick handler. He definitely has potential to be a top 2 defenseman and one of the 10 best dmen in the league someday

very interesting when you go through the list Flames blue chip prospects and compare them to the Jets.. Petan and Armia are far ahead of the Jets prospects... and Dano (not even mentioned) with his 31 pts in 69 NHL games would be significantly ahead of Shinkaruk
Morrissey in his last year of Juniors would have been significantly ahead of where Andersson is now... but the reality of adjusting to going pro has added a problem for Morrissey but he is still miles ahead of Kylington.
The Flames got Hamilton at the expense of losing a year of top prospects.....
If the Jets wanted to move up from 6 to 2 #17 from last year Connor and this years #6 would be hard to turn down. Same thing in reverse if the Flames had Barzal as a prospect.

He's not on the list because he would EASILY get 95% of the votes in the poll and it would be a very boring thread. Not sure why people don't understand why Tkachuk and Dubois are not being on the poll duh

It would be interesting who an Edmonton and Vancouver fan based poll would want them to take. have to believe that they would both want Dubois/Tkachuk or maybe Tkachuk/Dubois.

It sure "made sense" for the Boston Bruins when they traded away Phil Kessel to the Leafs lol I would do that trade in a SECOND if we got Torontos #1 pick next year and Torontos 2ND rounder this year for our #6 this year. That's an easy trade to me.

Johnny's size needs to be offset? When has his size been a liability? He's about the one forward on this team who isn't sometimes a liability outside of Backlund.
Again, I'm not talking about a player to put on Gaudreau's line. I'm talking about a player to put on Bennett's line, away from Gaudreau.

Huh? This logic makes no sense.
If you had 40 minutes of a Gaudreau-calibre player instead of 20, you would be much more difficult to match up to on the road. Last change, the only real advantage of being a home team, gets taken away when all your D pairings have to face an elite offensive talent.
Size is a bonus on the priority list, not a prerequisite in my opinion.

With Edmonton and Vancouver saying they are looking at a defenceman, I'd say our chances of getting Tkachuk are about 50/50. What could gum up our choice is if one or both decide they can trade down and still get their man at 7,8 or 9. If we want Tkachuk or Dubois we may be forced to overpay in a trade with one of them.
For me, at this stage, there are just too many options but if I need to, I guess I'm torn between Nylander and Chychurn. Both have top end skill while Nylander is maybe too soft and Chychurn makes poor decisions. Chychurn can learn but I don't see Nylander changing so I pick Chychurn.

In my opinion the Flames take whichever of Tkachuk, Dubios, or Nylander are left. I really hope Tkachuk slides to the Flames.

I'm going to go with Chychrun. Top 4 D potential. Given it's likely he'll round into form three years from now. Fits in the developmental timeline, I think.

The Flames had playoff success... Forward with the biggest positive impact:
Ferland..... Ferland plays at that level consistently and the Flames could afford to have another small skilled player flitting around.
The Penguins won in 2009 with a 21 year old Crosby and 22 year old Malkin banging and fighting for their ground.... both with over 70 minutes of penalties in the regular season and Malkin had another 50 in his 24 playoff games . Letang was the smallest of their d-men at 6-0 200 and was no cream puff. Scuderi 6-1 212, Gonchar 6-2 210, Orpik 6-2 218 and Hal Gill played 20 minutes a game in the playoffs @ 6-7 240 ... Mark Eaton was #6 at 6-1 214
Sure they had top end skill with Malkin, Crosby, Letang and Gonchar..... but they had no one near as small as Gaudreau or as passive as Monahan.
The 2009 Penguins would have run the Flames out of the building and playoffs in much the same manner as the Ducks did last year.
Chicago almost always has either Toews or Seabrook on the ice. Their first SC... Byfuglien, Ladd,
