Tkachuk doesn't seem to have as much of a ceiling. His game resembles guys like Saad, Ladd and Landeskog. Tkachuk is a "quality role player with the ability to play top line" rather than a player you want to be spending an asset like a 5th/6th/7th OA on.

Dubois OTOH seems to have the ceiling of a both-ways-beast. His game resembles guys like Benn, Bergeron, and our own Sam Bennett. Dubois is a line driving skilled forward with top-tier compete level, and some belligerence to his game. A X-Bennett-Dubois line has potential to become our top line, which would only open up the game for Johnny and Monny.

I think Tkachuk is a "third wheel" on a top line, Dubois is a 1A/1B. I don't want to draft a third wheel with a top 7 pick. I want to draft a 1A/1B. After watching Jost yesterday I'm becoming a believer in him, too.

Is acquiring a third wheel still important? Yes, that's what the entire rest of the draft is for. In fact that's what the AHL and farm team are for, for developing guys like Shinkaruk, Poirier, Klimchuk, Mangiapane, Pollock, etc to be potential third wheels. You develop your role players, you don't come across stars half as easily. Your Killorns, your Tanner Pearsons, your Lehteras... you have way more opportunities to acquire role players. You just have to develop them.

When I watch the youtube videos of all the prospects, I see him as being at the upper echelon of the skill spectrum, right up there with the top 3. He seems to have everything you want in a franchise type defenceman.

Does he have poor character or is his defensive play (which isn't always shown on youtube videos) really poor?
The deal with Sergachev is he's Russian. This year's Ivan Provorov... the best D prospect available but he's Russian. Hanifin/Chychrun had hype coming into the season. Juolevi got hyped from a great World Juniors on a stacked roster despite being pedestrian in the CHL.

I think Dubois is the sexier pick so more appealing the average fan. Tkachuk seems to be greatly underrated on a place like HF. I think highlight packages that most fans see tend to favour flashier players. I also think a lot of the things that Tkachuk is best at are underrated by certain fans. Things like winning board battles to retain possession, protecting by the puck by sticking his butt out and using his size/reach, driving the net without the puck, screening the goalie. All those things are important for generating offence at the NHL level but some fans don't value it as much as a guy who can deke and shoot in a more flashy way. Some fans want us to get a game breaking offensive talent. It's not a bad thing to hope for. What I think some fans fail to recognize is that a guy who has the skill to play with 1st liners but has the size, strength, work ethic and willingness to do the dirty work can be as important a piece in making an elite line.

Anyways I do think Tkachuk is being underrated by certains fans but I understand why that is and I don't think much can be done to change that perception. He hasn't dropped in the scouting rankings all year and I think he's solidly in the top 5 forwards in this draft class.

I think the question is, if we're drafting 6th and Dubois and Tkachuk are gone, who do we pick?

I think it looks more one sided than perhaps it is. 3x the votes for Dubois, but I voted for Dubois and would rank Tkachuk right behind. I assume many voters think that way.
If the Flames picked Tkatchuk over Dubois, I certainly wouldn't freak out.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Yep, I think that's the real interesting question. I'm leaning towards taking a d-man (Chychrun, Sergachev, Fabbro or Juolevi) over Nylander at this point.

I still think if we're drafting 6th that one of Dubois/Tkachuk is likely to fall due to a d-man going 4th or 5th. So I think your scenario is more likely if we're drafting 7th.
