The kid didn't even play 50 games this season. It's pretty premature to give such a responsibility when there are many players who have more experience.

Dude, they listed him as one of the best players in the NHL before he was even drafted or played a game.

Forcing young players into roles years in advance has always been the Oilers' MO

Well done Oilers! keep up the good fight

FYP. I still think Toronto keeps their nose clean from Stamkos and keeps their cap clear to throw him a 3x15 deal in two years (handshake agreement to bring it back to an 8x11M type deal after that when they might finally be on the cusp of contending). Edmonton would be in an untenable position as they would be crazy to match knowing that McD could opt for arbitration the following year to get to UFA. Edm will take their 4 draft picks and continue to suck. It will be hilarious.

If they make him captain, he will have played the fewest NHL games before being named even if he isn't technically the youngest (guessing here, haven't searched)

McDavid actually is the most logical choice for captain - and the team knew it from the moment they won the lottery last year as they named no actual captain last year knowing this would happen.

And the fact that McDavid is the most logical choice only underscores the totality of how the first decade of Edmonton's rebuild failed.

i think this is the only Oilers move that make sense. He is already the face of their franchise and one of the few hardest working Oiler this season. Besides I am guessing the Oilers will trade one or two of their supposedly superstars this off season. I got the feeling Eberle, Yakupov or even Taylor Hall will be traded.

If I were the Oilers I'd put an A on him for a full season. Then name a captain.

Stray observation: a lot of teams take on the identity of their captain.

Pittsburgh -bunch of whiners
Chicago - all business
LA - hard-nosed forechecking
San Jose - no real identity
Ottawa - free-wheeling no defense
Vancouver with Luongo - a joke
Vancouver with Sedin - aging and soft
Edmonton with Ference - absent from the ice
Edmonton with McDavid - too young and will cave under pressure?

A quiet player that dives.

He's a great player. No doubt whatsoever. I'm not sold on captain material at all, but I do agree somewhat with those that say the Oilers don't have many options. I understand the move from that point.
