Even if some of them are playing above their heads for a few games you'd think a few would stick and the team would be closer to or in a playoff spot.
The Flames had the talent in the system to tank. Bollign Raymond, Stajan, Bouma and most importantly Hiller. If they wanted to get dead last they were positioned to do so. Hiller single handedly was to tanking as Gretzky was to hockey pools in the 80's.

But that was from last year's draft.

Just a fun side note, I'm really good friends with Connor Bleackley's cousin, who is a Calgarian. It's kind of surreal to know that my friend's cousin, who is a random borderline NHL player, has such a large impact on the draft rankings this year, all because of some obscure rule about compensation for unsigned players. Weird.

Florida's 2nd round pick:
#53 - if Florida and the other 3 division winners are eliminated in the first two rounds
#54 - if Florida and 2 of the other 3 division winners are eliminated in the first two rounds
#55 - if Florida and 1 of the other 3 division winners are eliminated in the first two rounds
#56 - if Florida is the only division winner not to advance to conference finals
#57 or #58 - if Florida loses in the Eastern conference final
#59 - if Florida loses the Stanley Cup finals
#60 - if Florida wins the Stanley Cup
Well, I have no issues cheering my heart out for the Panthers to win the Stanley Cup this year. There's not that much of a difference between 7 spots late in the 2nd round of a draft that doesn't seem very deep this year. Of course, I'm sure there'll be some who want those 7 extra spots no matter what and will be cursing the Panthers all the way through the playoffs. C'est la vie.

Besides, who else would people want to win? The Blackhawks or Kings again? The Ducks or Sharks? No thanks. Maybe the Capitals? I guess, but that's not a very fun story seeing the most dominant regular season team go on to win the Stanley Cup. A cinderella team? The only ones that would even possibly be considered cinderella teams are the Red Wings (yuck), and the Wild (double yuck). Outside of the Stars making it to the conference finals and losing, there's not many other narratives to really support in the playoffs this year.

Hunter Shinkaruk does not play on the top line at this point in his career or get any PP time at all on any NHL team that is trying to win.

Maybe be they were not as obvious as the Canucks or Oilers but 9 pts in the last 10 games says otherwise.

There's a big difference between tanking and rewarding some prospects with an NHL game at the end of the season. Big difference. If they were full on tanking Hiller would've started the last handful of games and guys like Gio, Brodie, Mony & Johnny would've come down with a mystery illness. Hell, Johnny missed a game not that long ago, could've been a perfect excuse that he re-aggravated something. I also believe our upper management team would despise the notion of tanking. Don't try and create something that wasn't there.

^Stars, Flyers, Capitals, Islanders, Predators and Blues would be my preferred winners.

And yes, I would like to see the Flames gain those 7 spots. Could be a prospect they really like or could have a another team that really likes a prospect in that range offering multiple picks.

If the Flames don't get it, I hope that Arizona gets their Matthews. I can settle for Laine, no problem.

Was there something stopping us from trading picks from this years draft for Hamilton? No. Therefore given how many good picks we could possibly have this year the trade for Hamilton, who would be a franchise defensemen for most teams, was bloody highway robbery.

We finished 5th but the most likely outcome is 6th or 7th. I'm slowly preparing myself for that reality.

What's interesting is that this site has Matthews listed as a RW. I know he's listed as a C everywhere else, but for anyone who's paid attention to this guy, does he also play RW?

He played RW while in the USNTDP, but used primarily as a C ever since.

That seems to be a site that just does mock drafts. So basically people guessing the order. Not a source of information from what I can see.

Updated OP.

With Florida eliminated, their 2nd round pick acquired in the Hudler trade can be 53,54,55, or 56. Essentially the pick is the 56th OA, and will improve 1 spot for each of the division regular season winners (DAL, WSH, ANA) that are eliminated prior to the conference finals.

With the Wild eliminated, their 6th round pick acquired in the Jones trade will be the 165th OA.

As always these picks will drop an additional spot if Arizona receives a compensatory pick for Connor Bleackley.

The best case scenario (i.e. where the Flames get the highest possible 1st from the Stars) left in the playoffs for the Flames with respect to draft picks:
  • Ducks eliminated before Western Conference final.
  • Caps eliminated in the Eastern Conference final.
  • Stars eliminated in the Western Conference final and Russell's game played condition is met.
  • Arizona signs Connor Bleackley.

Stars pick becomes 27th OA and Panthers pick becomes 55th OA.

Worst case scenario left in the playoffs:
  • Stars win the cup but Russell's game played condition isn't met.
  • Ducks and Caps play in their respective conference finals.
  • Arizona receives compensation for Bleackley.

Stars pick becomes 61st OA and Panthers pick becomes 57th OA.

Meeting the conditions on the Stars trade is pretty much the only thing that makes a difference now. If I am not mistaken, Russell played 5/6, meaning he just needs to play 2 more games to make 50% (worst case Stars play 7 in the second round, 13 in total). Obviously, winning 4 more for the Stars is the tough part.

26th overall seems like a long shot but any 26-30 would be great to grab someone like Stanley.

Who can we pick at 9? Will Tkachuk or Nylander still be available?
