With Edmonton and Vancouver on the schedule, there's no way they go 0-5.
Winnipeg has Chicago, Minnesota, Anaheim, San Jose, LA to end the season. That's a likely 0-5.
It looks like Columbus is the only team currently behind the Flames who have a decent chance of passing them. They play the Islanders, Hurricanes, Rangers, Leafs, Sabres, and Hawks. They should be able to get some points against those opponents.

Ugh.

No problem with Hiller playing because, despite sucking this year, is still a veteran and you have to treat him with respect, let him play to showcase himself for another contract with another team.
I would be really disappointed if the Flames just dumped Hiller to the curb without giving him a chance to showcase himself. This is the man's livelihood here. He played well for the Flames last year, and they owe him some respect.
As long as the team in front of him is competitive, the result does not matter.

To hell with this post! Hiller IS done. Period.

This is the NHL. It's a business and the point of it is to win.
They owe Hiller nothing.
He's had more than ample opportunity to prove himself still capable.

I still think management "encouraged" the starting goalie strategy down the stretch.

You mean down the stench. Games like that make you remeber why this is a bottom 5 team.

I guess if the Flames lose this tonight, it ties the longest streak ever for futility in one building, tying the Penguins and Flyers of the 70's (80's?).
May as well have something memorable come out of this year.

You're right. From these 2 links, http://sportsstats.cbc.ca/hockey/nhl-boxscores.aspx?page=/data/NHL/results/2015-2016/recap70664.html

"The Ducks tied an NHL record for consecutive regular-season home wins over one team with an 8-3 thumping of the Flames on Wednesday night.
The Philadelphia Flyers won 23 straight over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Spectrum from 1980-87. The Flames haven't won in Anaheim since Jan. 19, 2004, when Roman Turek made 36 saves in a 5-1 victory and the head coaches were Darryl Sutter and Mike Babcock."

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to make Hiller and Backstrom end their careers on "good notes". Maybe against Edmonton or Vancouver.

Hiller against Vancouver almost has to happen. The team that can't score against the goalie that can't make a save.

Flames need to get bigger. Flames need someone that can stop a puck. That is all.

Those Edmonton and Vancouver games may be the two biggest games of the season so IMO it's imperative that Hartley goes with the Hiller/Backstrom tandem. That bad angle goal Backstrom let in was like slow motion as I knew as soon as the player shot from that angle it was going to go in because the guy seems lost in the crease. Just bad and I think we can all understand now why the Wild weren't even dressing him.
On a different note while that was without a doubt the worst goaltending tandem to ever play a game for the Flames the defensive coverage around the net was amateur from the first goal where the Ducks player was all alone by himself to take his time and out wait Hiller to the last one where two Ducks were perched in front of the net with Brodie and Hamilton just standing there looking up ice. Is anyone on the coaching staff in charge of defensive zone coverage? It's part of the reason the PK has been so awful as they always seem to leave players all alone at the side of the net. I hope the next goaltender the Flames sign gets himself a really nice payday because he's going to look bad some nights because of the way this team hangs their goaltenders out to dry.

Honestly at this point they aren't doing Hiller any favours by playing him. He's awful and clearly done as an NHL player. And it's disrespectful to the team in front of him to put him in net. They know they have little chance to win with Hiller back there. At least give them a goalie that gives them a chance to win.

The game against Edmonton decides the season series. No way we give them a freebie by playing Hiller.

Defensive breakdowns happen. NHL goaltenders should be ready for them. NHL level goaltenders don't respond to a them by falling on their faces and flailing around like a three year old whole didn't get their way. Seriously man, I swear Hiller's strategy this season has been to go full on fainting goat and hope opposition players will stop playing and check to see if he's alive! Worst goaltender I've seen at the NHL level. No team can survive that.

Makes me wonder where Hartley's head is that? He's the one who selects starting goaltender, and he's the one who makes the decisions on who plays when, so it appears this is on him.

I think we'll see a 3 goalie rotation to the end of the season.
Backstrom should get the next start with Ortio as backup.

Sure breakdowns happen but I missed all the multiple instances of Flames standing all alone in front of the Ducks net sometimes two all alone. Nobody is disputing the goaltenders have been bad but there's a deeper issue here. There are going to be a lot of disappointed Flames fans next season if they think goaltending alone will be a cure all for this team.
