Who cares how big he is. If he's a good player, he's a good player.
Brendan Gallagher is small, but you can be he's one of the most hated players to play against in the league.

It would be great if he could turn out anything close to Gallagher and put up points and be a pest. Does he play a high energy game like Gallagher?

Surprisingly Byron put up 99 points. That was the QMJHL and in 5 more games.
OHL is definitely a better league. Bread definitely much more offensively gifted.

And I thought I was pessimistic. 6th round pick or not, he's tearing it up. I really really hope he can translate that into more offense than Paul, 14 points, Byron...
|
That's what we should be hoping for. The odds of him achieving that are stacked against him. Big points in junior doesn't mean anything. There are a ton of players that were big time scorers in junior that couldn't translate that to the professional ranks. Just looking at the OHL in the past will tell you that. Look at these guys that were big scorers (100 pts) in the OHL and drafted outside the first two rounds. Look at the careers they have had. Do yourself a favor and take a look at it. Stats are available on the OHL web site and you can look the players up in hockeydb to see where they ended up. That should help temper your expectations and keep your enthusiasm in check. Mangiapane is an intriguing prospect, but he still has a very uphill climb to make. Getting Paul Byron out of him would be a win at this point. Anything more is gravy.

Considering how bleak everything else is regarding this team right now, I refuse to look up other players junior stats
Mangiapane is going to be Gaudreau^2.

Ya the OHL actually have teams with some form of defensive system.
Players can score 130 points in the Q and never make an impact in the NHL.
Mangiapane isn't big, but he's fast. That's the asset every small player needs to succeed in the NHL.
I think he'll progress very well in the AHL next season. Maybe even to the extent of being a trade deadline call-up depending on who is still in front of him.
Coaches have voted him the most underrated player. We as Flames fans shouldn't be taking this kid lightly anymore. Tempering expectations is fine, but I'm not considering Mangiapane a longshot to make it anymore.

Here's a list of every player who has scored 50 goals in the OHL: http://www.ohlalumnicentral.com/reso...-goal-scorers/
They basically fall into three categories: Players who scored 50 before they were draft-eligible; Players who scored 50 in their overage seasons; and Players who scored 50 in between those two extremes.
If you look at the list since 2000-01:
The first group includes Kane, Tavares, and Stamkos. By and large, this group has gone on to have successful NHL careers, and some have become the best players in the game. Brett MacLean is probably the only real "bust" out of this group.
The overage group is more bust than boom. Ryan Callahan falls into this group, but most of these players haven't done much of anything in the NHL.
The tweener group is where Mangiapane fits. Even though he was drafted last year, this is his Draft-eligible +2 season.
This is the list of players who put up 50 goals in their 19 year-old (but not overage) seasons since 2000-01 (plus their NHL points and games played): - David Bolland :: 208/433
- Reid Boucher :: 23/65
- Luca Caputi :: 9/35
- Miguel Delisle :: 0/0
- Matt Foy :: 13/56
- Corey Locke :: 1/9
- Brett Parnham :: 0/0
- Rob Schremp :: 54/114
- Vincent Trocheck :: 80/143
Bolland had a couple of decent seasons with Chicago. Boucher seems to be coming along well. If Mangiapane could follow the same development path as Trocheck, I think we'd all be happy.

At the least the guy should be able to still score at the AHL level. Darcy Tucker was a smallish guy I saw play a lot of Junior hockey. He played in a reasonably high scoring era, so his numbers exceed anything most guys can accomplish today. He eventually had to re-invent himself a bit to play in the NHL, but was able to do so and at times be a reasonably effective NHL player. As much as many a fan hated the Flames having a Scott Nichol on the roster...he stuck around the NHL for a better part of 10 years and played more than 600 games.

He was the best Flame at penticton, which no one saw coming. Continued to stand out into training camp. I think we've got a player in him. Just can't believe he was passed over, and then left available until the 6th round last draft.

Nothing against you or this list but this reminds me of the list that a few posted when Gaudreau won the Hobey Baker and there were a bunch of nobodies mostly. Hopefully Mangiapane can make that list look way better as Gaudreau made his list better.

Which was stupid, since the Hobey Baker award is voted on by college NCAA officials, and usually their decision is heavily weighted in favour of seniors. The award itself has nothing to do with offensive potential.
Getbak's list is NOTHING like that. A much more apt comparison is to those of us who argued from Gaudreau's NHLe rating in his third NCAA season as a fairly accurate projection of his NHL potential, and factored this in accordance with his age: Gaudreau was the most prolific scoring forward the NCAA had seen in two decades. In that respect, Getbak's analysis is spot on in that he is judging Magniapane against his closest comparables in terms of age.

Wouldn't the. Expansion draft happen after next season?
He would not qualify for the draft anyways as. 1st and 2nd year players would be protected from the draft automatically from my understanding.

I think we really need to find a player that complements Bennett. Having 2 dangerous lines would be just what the doctor ordered!

If you can fill a lot of the rest of the lineup with big, strong forwards then I think you definitely can have a couple little guys surrounded by them.
We still need to add a top two line power forward or two. That type of player makes space for smaller guys.

Relax, that's why I said it reminded ME, thought I made it pretty clear it was nothing against his list. That's just what it first reminded me of.
