not sure that's "average" considering how terrible some of the chances and bounces we give up. Look at the Avs game the other night, wide open net on the first goal, and a bounce right off of Gio's leg on the second. Those kind of goals are percentage killers no matter who's in net and I'm sure if someone went over all the goals we`ve given up this year, yes you would find some goals you`d like the goalie to have back but I`m not sure you`d find enough that you could project a .918 save percentage for a so-called average starter. The fact that this team is second in blocked shots is a big red flag because it`s blocks that often lead to ugly bounces, and further serve to prevent goalies from padding their save percentage with easy saves.

Quick question - I tuned in until the last bit of the third period and before I had to leave Byron had collided with Bennett and looks like Sam was in pain on the bench? Were there any injury updates or was it him being winded or some such?

Byron unintentionally clipped Bennetts head in the neutral zone. Wasn't an intended hit or anything, however Sam came back shortly after.

Powerplay Quarterback

Tuned in to see Backstrom play. The big difference between him and ortio/hiller is his ability to consistently play at the top of his crease and control rebounds appropriately. For a guy who hasn't played in over a year, he's certainly not lacking in confidence.
Playing aggressively like that and doing it smartly is a tough thing to do. Weird glove hand positioning. Would love to see him play against a better team to see where he's truly at. I didn't get a sense of how quick he is going post to post with the puck in front of him. Some of that is because he wasn't tested a whole lot and some of it is that there were no rebounds.
He's got to be pretty happy with that game.

I seem to remember thinking that Backstrom was a total Flames-killer in his prime. Hated Wild games as a kid. Glad he's on our side and did well his first game!

Watched most of the game and I am always happy for a win. Its a little frustrating that a few players are playing their best now that the season is lost.
And really, how did management let the goalie situation last this long? If playoffs were truly the goal from game one, there should have been a veteran free agent or two brought in at some point.
Hate being a Debbie Downer. Just fix the goalie situation.

I was very impressed watching Backstrom tonight.
Whenever he made a save, or went behind the net to play the puck- it looked completely comfortable to him. What a nice change as compared to the rest of the season.
I've said it before, and we'll see if he is ok in future games but- I want this goalie for next year!

Good goalies stop those shots they shouldn't make, that's the difference. A good goalie bails his team out when they make mistakes.

Ortio could learn a few things from Backstrom like not wandering from the net and not losing the net when moving from side to side.

I agree, but you have to think for that to happen the flames would have needed to trade one of Hiller or Ramo when they were both playing like crap. At no point this season was Hiller tradeable. Ramo was not tradeable, and then got his game good enough to stay as flames goaltender until he got hurt. After he got hurt he was again untradeable.
What needed to happen was Ramo and Hiller came into the season playing like they finished last season, or Ortio coming in and truley stealing one of their jobs away when he had the chance near the start of season. Hiller never got going and the other two took forever to get going.
IMO Ramo and Hiller gone. I'd bring back Ortio on a cheap one year contract but i would make him work for the back-up job. Flames need to trade/sign true starter this off season and sign a cheap veteran back-up (less than a million) and Ortio (less than a million) to fight it out for back-up job. Loser goes down to the minors costing the flames very little in cap space if anything.

You nailed it. I would be open to signing Ramo if he is good with backup money. But if you acquire a true number one, Ramo is really not required and I like the idea of a veteran NHLer battling Ortio.

Monahan is learning how to be elite. Love his Ryan Smyth attitude going to the net and stirring things up.

IMHO - if Backstrom keeps up this great work ethic and good play, we should sign him to a 2-way deal at the league minimum for next season. Guy seems like a great man and a hard worker - he looks like a great role model for the young guys. He wants to play - why not give him a job? He deserves it. He can mentor Gillies in Stockton.
Just my two cents.
