Go from playing with Crosby to being on a bottom 3 team in Canada? Why would he do that?

What 8 teams do you think he would list?

That's stupid. I doubt many if any NHLers think like that. Now WPG and EDM are likely to appear on many NTC. The rest are far more debatable.

Ok, how is it stupid? Hornquist is going to want to win, and going to take that aren't likely to during the length of his contract would be silly. Toronto? Nope. Edmonton? McDavid factor I suppose, but so much toxicity there I doubt it. Vancouver? Umm hell no. Ottawa? They have no chance and I'm not sure they're going to be any better on the next two years. Winnipeg? Rebuild again. Calgary? Probably 2-3 years away from being a contender.
I'm not saying it because they're Canadian teams, but because they're all in the top 8 of teams not likely to contend during his contact.

Cuz there are 29 teams that do not have Crosby, he's only protected from 8 of them.
Gaudreau is a superstar in the making. He gets exposure in Canada and East coast. Why woudn't he want to be on that team, this team did make the playoffs last year, bombed this year but can bounce back next year.
Why would he list all Canadian teams? not like he's some US kid. He's from Sweden and there's another Swede on this team that loves Calgary Flames.
Just my opinion. Not to mention, he's not some superstar. Once you've been asked to waive your NTC, you're being told they don't want you anymore. So it would be smart to go to a team that does want you.

If you're Hornquist's age, you're most likely going to use the leverage you negotiated to go where your chance of winning is highest, no?

That's why you sell hype and the future. Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, Brodie, Hamilton, 2016 possible pick. It's not unheard of or anything. It's Patrick Hornquist... yeah a basement dwelling team might not be his 1st 2nd or 3rd choice but I have little doubt if Burke and Treliving had the opportunity to speak with him they could convince him to wave it to come here.
Robyn Regehr had a NMC and ended up in Buffalo of all places, it's not unheard of.

Where is winning the highest? Teams like Hawks, Kings, Ducks, Rangers, Caps etc. What do they usually do in off-seasons? shed salary and try to re-sign ther own guys.
He might want to go to winning team but a winning team will have the same problem as Pit, no cap room.

How is that Hornquist's problem? Then he doesn't leave

I don't think it's crazy to think that Horqvist would waive for Calgary. It's not like this is Toronto that just started tearing their team down. Assuming they fix the goaltending, they should be competing for a playoff spot. He'd probably be playing with Gaudreau, lots of opportunity to put up points.

I'd rather take a pass at Hornqvist. I don't think the team should give up assets as long as they can sign someone through UFA. If they are going to trade for a winger right now, I'd rather it be for a better player. If the pens give him up for next to nothing and he agrees to come here, I think he's a second liner at most for the Flames.

I'm sure he wants to win but you're completely discounting other factors. Maybe he wants to raise his family in Vancouver. Or maybe he likes winter and wouldn't see it as a negative factor for AB. Maybe his wife has family in Toronto. Maybe he wants to play on the PP with Johnny Hockey. Who the hell knows but your argument is oversimplified.

He only has protection for 8 teams, are you saying there are only 8 non-winning teams?
If they want to move him they will move him and it may not be to his liking.

You're missing my point. He still can eliminate 8 choices and will likely use that leverage. I never said he has any more say than that. It's my opinion he would have the flames on his list.
I'm unclear what your argument here is

There is a lot of effort being put into an argument about the 8 teams that Hornqvist would hypothetically not waive to

As far as I can tell you're saying his top priority is winning and thus Flames and all of the other Canadian teams will be on his NTC.
I'm saying he only has 8 teams he can block a trade too, so he can still end up on a bad team. Likely what will happen if they decide to move him cuz bad teams will have some cap room and the good ones will not.
So it's my opinion he would not have the Flames on his list cuz Flames are better then their record (mediocre coaching and goaltending being the biggest reason behind their record).

If we can't find a long term solution for a top line RW, I would be all for bringing in Jagr on short deal. It would be great to have one of the best all time players dress for the Flames for a season. He might not be at his peak any more, but he can still play. I bet Gaudreau could set him up for a few.

Jagr should be our top target this off season! He isn't a long term solution but he could really help this team's future by helping them now.
