Hudler won't be back next year but his "resurgence" is a real head scratcher for someone looking for a rental or UFA this summer.
P.S. Does Hiller get an NHL contract next year? Serious question.
IMO it is highly, highly unlikely we see Hiller in the NHL next year. Same goes for Ortio obviously. Treliving may need to look at the waiver wire just to show the team he has not totally given up. Can't go with this for the rest of the year.
Hudler's resurgence is the single best thing that can happen to this team over the next few games. If they can get someone to overpay a little... There should be zero thoughts of re-signing him. His play at the start of the year is much more indicative of what we are likely to see if he signs a new contract.
The powerplay, it must be noted, has been fantastic without Wideman.
In the games since Wideman was suspended we've gone 7/26 on the powerplay, or 26.9%. This includes going 0/5 against Arizona. The best PP in the league is Washington who score 24.4% of the time.
Prior to Wideman being out we had a titanically awful 12.7% PP, we've more than doubled our success with the man advantage without the guy who is supposedly our quarterback.
What's really awesome is Hamilton's emergence as our go-to on the PP, in the 7 games without Wideman he's got 2g 3a 5p with the extra attacker.
If Hartley puts Wideman back out on the PP when we get him back, I don't want him fired, I want him literally run out of town on a rail. I want the last scene of O Brother Where Art Thou?

Until recently there has been no secondary scoring
Your other points are right but that one isn't. We don't have a "second first line" but our second line has been fine. Since November, Backlund has been on the ice for 41 goals in 42 games, Monahan for 51 in 42 games. That's a reasonable production considering Bennett is a rookie and Frolik is a poor fit beside Backlund.

No just no. Ramo has provided NHL calibre goaltending.
The issues run much deeper.
Power play stunk most of the year
Penalty kill has been hot garbage all year
Top line doesn't do anything on the road
Until recently there has been no secondary scoring
The depth players have been crap all season
It is simply not a good team.
Ramo has been good lately, up until injury. But if he (or Hiller) had given us average goaltending to start the year, we'd still be in a playoff race. I love Ramo, but he was terrible the first few weeks.
Power play has been better of late, as mentioned above, with Wideman off of it.
Can argue with the top line away from the Dome.
Secondary scoring has been fine. Jones was great at the beginning of the year, Bennett had a stellar run for a few weeks, Backlund has been steady, points from the backend has been great.
Finding a capable goalie should be a top priority this season. Not even opposed to bringing Ramo back as insurance since his recent play has been good.

The time period in which they were missing secondary scoring was oddly when they were winning in December, IIRC. It's also when Ramo was playing his best (IMO he was going back to mediocrity leading up to his injury).
Good on Hudler for raising his trade value. Yes he will leave a big hole, but with the way he's been playing it wouldnt' surprise me to see him score a 1st rounder. We could sure use that.
Yes. At least he has the decency to heat up before the deadline, unlike that Cammalleri gnome.
I was starting to worry that we would be picking in that seventh or eighth no mans land come seasons end. Goaltending will ensure that's not the case. This team will have a top five pick.

Surprised at some of the negativity in here today. The Flames played pretty good I thought, particularly the first line. Saw one guy say Gaudreau has been terrible for 2-3 weeks which I could not disagree more with. Monahan looked really good today and so did Hudler. If we could only bring back one UFA I would choose Hudler.
I think Nakladal did pretty good today. I don't think Russell would be missed too bad.
Hiller was poo. Ortio had another chance to take the starters net and I think he blew it once again.
Frustrating to watch the Flames be all over them and then have the Ducks go down and score. But I'm fine with the loss, the young guys played well and that's all I care about today.
Oh, and the guy on overtime who said the Flames should trade Brodie and a 1st to Edmonton for Nugent-Hopkins and a 1st is crazy.

That would be a dream trade for the Oilers. Mustve been a troll.
Ortio looked really small in net. He seems to shrink when the puck comes at him instead of getting big.
I remember last year when he had his chance, he looked like a very confident and steady goalie in net. He gave the impression of a pro, not a prospect.
Today he look like some rookie prospect called up for his first game in the league. Hopefully it was just some nerves...Ortio seems to play well when he has a bit of cockiness to his game.
Who said that?
Hahaha, that's hilarious.
We don't need a top 6 centre. We need a good goalie, and a top line right wing.
