It's going to be poetic when they draft 1st overall this June. Five 1st overall picks in seven years to match their run in the 80s. It will also coincide with them tying the all time record for consecutive years out of the playoffs.
I think it's fair to say their former greatness will be overshadowed by their putrid present at that point.

Not a chance I make this trade but that's purely because I am not a Flames fan.

Not sure how you trade when the organizations and players are completely different.
Selfishly deny the players that represented Canada as Canadians, not NHL players, for a team to hoist the cup?

You're over thinking this.

Would you do if it were your team in the trade?

I'd like to say I still wouldn't make the trade and I guess I can say that now that I think about it. Exact same situation did indeed occur and much as a cup would be nice I think the gold medals still feel better. In particular the one from 2010, winning it at home (Double gold in hockey that year which was amazing)

Moreover it is really unfair to take events that happened years ago and try to pretend that we wipe them all from our memories. Of course everyone is going to pick stanley cup. Why? Because we didn't win one of those but we did win 3 olympic gold medals. Stanley Cup vs Olympics for loyalty and which is the better competition aside the fact is we all have those memories and as such we're going to say "I want the thing I don't have over the thing I already have and can't be taken away".
Basically, I think it's a flawed question.

Good lord. My favorite was "I feel like this turning into a what would you prefer?" . Yes, that does appear to be the idea of the thread, lol.

Probably because most people on here either weren't born, were really young to remember or were at an age that they couldn't truly celebrate a Stanley Cup back in 89!

Pretty simple yes for me. The emotional investment over a course of a season to a improbable playoff run is much greater, which IMO leads to a greater reward.
The gold medal games were fun and all but they amounted to a weekend outing.

Lifetime Suspension

2002:
-hadn't won gold in 50 years
-redemption from humiliating 4th in Nagano
-revenge against the USA who won in 96
2004:
-won it 15 years before
-played all 4 rounds so there was lots of partying anyways
Honestly I wouldn't trade 2002 for two cups. If the flames had won in '04 we still would have bragging rights over Vancouver, but not against Edmonton so things wouldn't be that different.

Since we are discussing ridiculous hypotheticals: I would not trade any Olympic golds for a Flames Stanley Cup, however I would trade the 1999 Hitmen WHL championship, my Lord Beaverbrook Social Studies 30 award, and a 2L bottle of Australian Olive Oil.

It's not just any Olive Oil, but gold meal winning Olive Oil! Also, I just realised they don't make the 2L bottles anymore but I'm willing to up the ante to the 3L jug!
