Cap space stays the same throughout the season, but cap hits go down as the contract is paid out.
Four million for Hudler? Two million at the halfway point.
One million with a quarter of the season left. etc etc. Rudimentary and simple explanation.

Boston is sitting in a playoff spot and are only one point behind second in their Division. If they win tonight, they'll be in second in the Atlantic at the end of the night.
Pending UFA or not, I can't see them trading away the player who is second in points and third in goals for them this season. If they trade Eriksson away, they pretty much have to turn around and acquire a rental player to replace him.
Between Hudler and Vrbata, I'd want Hudler if I was a GM looking for a rental player. Not only does he have better numbers this year (in an off year for him), he also has better career numbers. Plus, he has his name on the Cup and was a key player for the Wings during their 2 runs to the Final.
I guess with any of those guys (Ladd too), another determining factor is if you plan on trying to re-sign him before he hits free agency, or if you're just looking for a straight rental.

Thanks, I am fully aware how the cap works. He will have been paid for essentially 3/4 of the season already leaving the remaining to be paid by the acquiring team.
Say Hudler will have roughly 1 million cap hit on trade deadline day, Staal is going to have 2.5-ish. In that ball park. He'll be the most expensive player at deadline to acquire. As far a cap teams looking for a push in the playoffs go, I don't know how many teams could actually take him on. Of course there is the salary retained aspect too. But That's a premium. how many teams are going to pay more for that on a UFA?

If Hudler can get going on the top line again, that 2nd round pick could turn into a 1st. If it doesn't, I'm still happy with a 2nd for a pending UFA top 6 winger.

after reading this from Friedman, I doubt he would sign cheap :

19. Looking to see who takes a shot at Jiri Hudler. The hardest thing to do in this league now is score, and he can do it. It makes sense for the Wild, although they prefer size, too. He hasn’t been himself this year, and some of that undoubtedly is seeing Dougie Hamilton and Michael Frolik get paid while he hasn’t. The writing is on the wall. Get him into a new situation where he can score a couple of big goals and he’ll be motivated to do it.

The Calgary Flames are getting calls on pending UFA winger Jiri Hudler, whom I don’t think is likely to sign an extension.
The 32-year-old Czech scored 31 goals last season but has struggled with just six so far this season.
Still, for the right price he’d be a nice top-six add for a contender.

It’ll be interesting to see who’s in the mix for Hudler. Panthers GM Dale Tallon is on record saying he wants to acquire a goalscorer by the trade deadline and Hudler’s former team, the Detroit Red Wings, have struggled on offense lately (and were called out by veteran leader Pavel Datsyuk for it.)

Hard to think the Flames couldn't get a 2nd for Hudler

 Posted the 6 millionth post!

I'm predicting Hudler goes back to Detroit, and I think they could get definitely get Detroit's 2nd rounder this year for him. Perhaps we can flip another veteran with Huds and get a 1st, but that seems like a stretch.

Mirtle on Twitter said they have been asking for a second for Hudler for a while now.

Was it not mentioned in media the first year hudler was here that Detroit missed him a lot and regretted letting him walk?

Dreger: "I wouldn't say that Brad Treliving is doing his very best to shop Jiri Hudler, but according to other teams and an acknowledgement by the Calgary #Flames - they absolutely would consider trading him."

Pens trade more future for yet another winger? Are they trying to break some sort of trading record?

I think a big part of our struggles this year have been because Hudler isnt invested in our season.
They're right though, hes not a part of the long-term plan so its likely time to move along.

Hudler earned every penny in his time here. His work developing Monahan and Gaudreau last year was outstanding.
I wish him the best when he is traded, unless it is to Vancouver, then I wish him the best in the offseason.

I understand this from the team's perspective, he's simply too old to be part of the long term vision.
But for the life of me I can't understand it from Jiri's perspective. Maybe there really is something to the rumour that he doesn't get along with Hartley. I can't think of another reason why he would appear so disinterested and disengaged the season after finishing top 10 scoring, being part of the best line in the NHL over the last half of the year and winning a playoff round.

well imagine being a big part of the flames trip to the playoffs and being the highest scorer on the team. Than seeing outsiders like hamilton and frolik come in and get big deals along with gio while u dont get anything. I can see why he might be upset.
