I have had the thought for some time that Colborne is not the type of player that you would see on the better teams. Why does he seem to be such a coach's favourite?

Because Colborne is still considered a project by the coaches. He has hands, size and skill. Now Colborne might not be aware of that but if the coaches can mold him into the player that he can be, then he'd be great.
It really is too bad that he doesn't take advantage of any of his tools. He could be a really good player if he did. I Had really high expectations for him this season, especially after his performance in the playoffs... But now I'm just

What irked me the most about Backlund was the penalty 200 feet from your own net right in front of the ref. I watch the games on NHL game centre and you could tell watching on a computer that it was a penalty. Just a stupid penalty after coming back from down 3-1 and controlling play.

And coaches would have reminded players about the success rate of the SJ power play.

I especially liked Ferland tonight. His skill-set was on display. I don't think he looked out of place alongside Gaudreau and Monahan at all. I also loved him at the end of the game when Bennett and Vlasic were fighting, and he goes and challenges Burns.
Nice to see a bunch of players get out of their slump - though it was a loss, hopefully it gives these guys a bit of confidence.
Enjoyable loss, and the Sharks got lucky with their deflections. Thought the Flames deserved to win that one, but at least it was a great game to watch.

Ferland seems to have rejuvinated the first line.
We just really, really need to tighten up on the lackadaisical plays in the defensive zone. The Panthers have won their last few games despite being oushot by being oppotunistic and getting good goaltending. This means the golden giveaways cannot continue into wednesday or we'll be giving the rest of the pacific separation very soon.

Was at the game. Ferland looked good, he was visible and created turnovers. Colborne is worse than Raymond now. Bennett is a beast.
Stajan was showing toughness and push back most of the game.
We lost because of our defense. It's like a 5 second zone out moment and we let the Sharks create huge open areas to pass to in the neutral and defensive zone.
Everyone would get out of position at once and I'd do the Jackie Chan wtf. Ramo was dumbfounded multiple times when there were scoring chances that should never have happened.

Backlund wasn't as terrible as some are saying and he wasn't as great as some were saying. He made some good plays and some terrible plays but the fact is that he's very meh. I think he should be moved for a few reasons the most important one being he can be replaced from within. I think Granlund could replace him and the team really wouldn't suffer that much on the ice but would gain cap space. I think he's one of the players you shop and hope other teams see something in.
Ferland is awesome and I really liked him on the top line but when Frolik is healthy I think you put him on the top line and put Ferland with Bennett and see if those 2 combos work.
Seems like this team has the will but no the skill. It's good to see some players progress but there just aren't enough players trending in the right direction.

Goal, assist, 7 hits, career-high 20:55 in TOI. Micheal Ferland accomplished more vs SJ than the top line RW had contributed the past month.

Exactly. And this is the issue.
He isn't good enough to be a 1 or 2 center on a playoff team. He isn't a good enought/role enough #3 center for a playoff team.
He does nothing above average. He isn't big, isn't physical, can't win face-offs, isn't a shutdown C, doesn't kill penalties well.
It doesn't mean he is bad at these things. He is just average at them all. And that's an issue if you aren't scoring center.

Yeah, I haven't seen a follow up yet either.
Looked as though he maybe got cut on his leg while tangled up behind the net.

Please don't say things like this.
Bennett is a big boy who plays in the NHL now. No one needs to check birth certificates.

People also forget that last season was technically his sophomore season. He's going through a bad slump many young players do. But at the same time, incredibly hard to defend him lately. I keep hearing that he has all the tools. But what exactly are those tools? He's tall. He's good at defending the puck. He's got a big ass. He's good at shootouts. He's a good interview.
But overall, I fail to see exactly what is in his so-called toolbox that gives him such 'potential'. He has a muffin shot. His passing sucks. He's not fast. Sometimes he's physical, but no where near enough. I've never seen him dangle anybody other then the shootout. I wouldn't say he has very good hockey IQ.
The trade for Joe was great. But looking at the forwards on our roster:
Colborne
Jones
Stajan
Jooris
Raymond
Bollig
etc
That's a garbage group of forwards. Maybe Stajan gets a pass since he actually makes our 4th line somewhat reliable. But when you ice a lineup like that, it's no wonder the Flames are stuck in mediocritiy. And truthfully there doesn't seem to be a lot coming in through the pipeline.
Treliving has a lot of work to do before this team even begins to consider itself a contender.

He did return to the game after his apparent injury, so hopefully it's nothing too major.

Solid game from Ferland. He's exactly the type of player we need desperately in our top 6. I remember being very angry when Hrudey kept saying Ferland got taken off the 1st line and Bouma and Jones were getting time up front. I even called it before the game that Hartley would take Ferland off that line. But glad to see he went back and stuck with it.

Jooris is a guy I would keep from this group too. Serviceable and works his tail off.
Jones I don't mind as a player. As a $4m cap hit though, it's not good. If he could be had for $1-$1.5, I'd keep him.

Ferland had a great game. His points came because a) he was in front of the net, and b) because his line was able to gain, and maintain pressure in the offensive zone (thanks in part to him).
But it was more than that. He also showed his speed and his hands. And he added a physical element to the line. He has easily been the best solution to that line in a while. Hope it continues.
