Exp:
Was completely floored when I heard this at 5 this morning. Literally just sat a stared at my garage wall listening to the tributes and his music for an hour.
Real big loss for the music industry and all who enjoy his stuff.
RIP David and thanks are simply not enough.

Bowie and Elton John are the two most important musicians from the UK who don't belong to a band. Agree?
I am a fan of Billy Bragg. Clearly not in the same universe as Bowie though.
Sun said it perfectly for me on page one.
Loved his music, big influence on me in the 80's.
Don't get sad about celebrity deaths mostly, but this one certainly surprised and shocked me.
Was just driving to get some groceries and I think it was FM 107 played two songs back to back and I thought how odd. (I rarely listen to the radio so i had not heard) Then they said David Bowie RIP or some such. I actually had to pull over and stop.

Makes you realize that we're going to be having a lot of these deaths in the next decade. Basically all of the legends of the 60's and 70's are getting to that age.
Elvis Costello? Rod Stewart? Kate Bush? Eric Clapton?
...and the Attractions though?
I think Matty (I think it was) nailed it with Bowie and Elton John. I don't think anyone comes close. All mad love for Kate Bush aside to try and stay objective!

Clapton belonged to a few different bands, but I agree he's at his best on his own. Stewart as well, started with the Faces. Costello is great, but no the type of influence of Bowie or EJ IMO.

I would say your opinion is correct.

Bowie was in a few bands too earlier in his career. The Konrads. The King Bees. The Mannish Boys. The Buzz. The Riot Squad.
Elton John's bands - The Corvettes. Bluesology.
But of course they are mostly known for their great body of solo work.
Yeah, going by that I would say Clapton belongs with them for sure.
I disagree, much of Clapton's well know music was in groups, Cream, Yardbirds, Derek and The Diminos, Blind Faith & John Mayall and The Bluebreakers which produced this gem:

I don't disagree, but his influence on the culture of guitar is probably only paralleled by Hendrix and Berry. Without him those bands were nothing. Yes, even Cream.
