But should personal opinion trump what's accomplished on the ice insofar as a jersey retirement goes?
I think it should be a part of it I guess but what he accomplished points / play-wise was so monstrous it really is an albatross out there for the Flames.
When you really think about what Lanny contributed to the Flames, vs. what Fleury contributed to the Flames- it really doesn't seem consistent with whose jersey got retired and whose didn't.

The original point suggested the fans wanted his number retirement - I'm just saying not everyone does. Not suggesting one person's opinion should matter - but if he's ticked off the owners to the point they don't want to do it - then I would get that.
I don't think jersey retirement should come down to on ice performance alone.
Anyways my feelings on Fleury are well known and it has been debated to death.

Fleury played with more heart than any Calgary Flame ever... perhaps Johnny Gaudreau can one day match Theo's intensity.

One of the two Retiring number of Forever a Flame should be stopped, it's like saying "ya you were good but not that good." with FAF.
And Theo deserves to have his number up in the rafters.

The official stance is that they are no longer retiring numbers. So they have stopped one of them - in theory. Though I anticipate the debate will really ignite when Iginla retires.

It will be embarrassing if Iginla doesn't get his number retired. FaF will not do him justice, he's one of the best players ever. Can't have Vernon's number hanging there and not Iggy's.

If anyone gets a chance to see it the one-man play on Theo's life is outstanding.

Instead of being grateful for the opportunity when he was cut (something that everyone knew he would be), the guy crapped all over the the organization and its players once again. I'm sure that left some really sour feelings about him amongst the ownership group.
Theo needs to shut up for 5-10 years, and he'll probably get consideration again.

Fleury's Fleury. He can yap like a Chihuahua, but he walked the talk. Maybe it's time to give the little guy some big respect.

For the record, if the flames offer Fleury FAF and not full jersey retirement, and he turns that down, I will certainly respect that, and good on him.

I wouldn't respect that at all but it wouldn't surprise me if that's how this ends up playing out.

Exactly. There's a lot of stuff from the 90's that happened behind the scenes that the organization had to endure/cover for Fleury. Stuff that likely would'nt have been as easy to hide (thus, wouldn't have been able to keep him around as long as they did) in the this social media age.
The owners then are the same as they are now and have long memories. The Flames then stepped up to get Fleury reinstated out of the substance abuse program, so he could get a pension and perks, and, as a bonus, have his pre-season comeback.
Months later after the Flames doing something they weren't required to do for him, Fleury, as Table5 mentions, went out and crapped on the organization, basically saying they shouldn't have cut him as he could've done better then the current roster as they were in a slump.

On this day 27 years ago, Theo Fleury scored his first two goals as a Flame

Why would you respect such an arrogant, petulant and egotistical thing? When an organization wants to honour you in some way, you accept it graciously even if there is a better or higher honour that they've chosen to withhold. That is the mature and classy thing to do.
I fully expect Fleury to accept any kind of award or FAF. If he turns it down, he only does disservice to himself and his fans.

Maybe just Spite , or maybe because it's obvious he deserves the highest honour and IMO the team is disrespecting Him for anything less.

All true, and very real (especially Browna's assessment). And yet, nobody has worn #14 in real NHL action since.
While I understand that jersey-retirement is kind-of fading out in general, I'd be all for Fleury's #14 being retired. Besides Iginla, Theo's the only player for whom I think the Flames should do this. I completely understand how the Flames' brass can (legitimately!) harbour resentment towards Theo's behaviour, especially after the team brought him back for the swan-song. And I also agree that the Flames organization doesn't owe him anything.
But his on-ice performance as a Flame warrants a jersey-retirement, in my opinion. He was also "The" Guy for an entire generation of Flames fans. For better or worse, he was the face of the team for a decade, and that outward face represented tenacity and effort, regardless of what was going on behind the scenes.
I really hope that Theo and the Flames can eventually reach some sort of middle-ground, so that those of use who grew up in the 80s/90s as Flames fans can have that final chapter written and closed.

Grant Fuhr, like Billy Smith before him, was one of the games ultimate "money" goalies of all time. He let in some soft ones often, but when it was a big game or a series was on the line or a game in overtime Fuhr was nothing short of spectacular.
