Highest value would have been the trade deadline, and I don't think anyone would have the stones to make those moves at that time. I don't think the missed opportunity was "glaring", and in fact the opportunity may not be missed at all. Russell and Wideman are definitely candidates to move out, but I doubt their value would have been that high, even at the deadline or at the draft to have made it a no-brainer decision.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Exactly. Tried to resign him and could not. At that point, trading him was a no brainer. In hindsight the return looks great so credit due there.

As others have stated we don't know what the potential returns look like so it's hard to judge. But we have gone from a cap flor team to a cap team very quickly yet didn't seem to get any better. Rebuilding teams should have cap space it seems to me.

It's not really necessary to have cap space if you aren't going to use it during the season. We are a rebuilding team, but not a poor ownership team.

Goaltending
Treliving overspent on goaltending short term because he wasn't going to spend that cap on anything else. Come July 1st, he'll have 8.5 million to spend on goaltending, which will be impossible to do with what's available, including having the same tandem again next year. They've played their value in half, i'd figure. Each would be lucky to receive a 2M dollar contract next season.

Trelivings goaltending plan obviously backfired on all cylinders this year. He is paying two goalies he signed way more than they are worth to put up atrocious numbers that resemble replacement level goaltending.

It's safe to say after what has taken place so far this season, Ramo, Hiller and Ortio have a combined value of 0. As free agents they'll may have some value to certain teams lacking depth, but they have zero trade value.

Gillies and McDonald have value equal to the draft number they were originally picked at. Gillies is probably worth a 2nd and not a 3rd, but each has what I would call a negative value. They are worth more to the team as prospects than they are in the trade market. Better to just sit on these guys and wait 3 years instead of drafting all over again and waiting 5 or 6.

TLR
Gillies, McDonald - 2nd round pick
Hiller, Ortio, Ramo - no trade value

Defense

Giordano have wavering value right now. As his performance returns to the level coaches are used to seeing over the last two seasons, he'll continue to be in the conversation as the piece that could put another team over the top for a playoff run.

I would say that value doesn't exist right at this moment, but that even during his extension years, GMs will remember his game and consider making the big splash for the chance to win a cup. That big splash won't be multiple first round picks, but if he's traded in the next 3 seasons it could be a first round plus prospect, similar to the Jarome and Bouwmeester trades.

Brodie is the most valuable player on the team. His contract puts him well ahead of Gaudreau in terms of value. Brodie could command multiple first round picks, like Dougie Hamilton nearly did a season before. Brodie will not be moved in my estimation, because he's exactly the player you are looking for to begin with. If the Flames did choose to part with Brodie, he would bring home the biggest bounty, undoubtedly.

Hamilton's stocked plummeted along with his play upon arrival here, but fans and announcers alike are noticing the needle move in the other direction for Dougie. He's not the competent corsi monster we'd all like him to be, but he's not as bad as he was when he got here. His value is nowhere near what we paid to get him, especially under a hefty contract and without much output on the scoresheet. He still has value, but is worth more to hang on to and hope he plays in the future like he did in the past until coming to Calgary. Approximate value is probably 2 2nd round picks, or a good young prospect.

Russell - Hard to say, not all GMs have swallowed the advanced stats pill, and for those who like a player with grit who's willing to create an atmosphere of competitiveness, Russell might be their guy. Value here is likely another veteran d-man with salary or a 4th round pick.

Wideman - High salary, not necessarily the worst cap hit in the world, and has shown he can dish and clap, putting up huge numbers again last season. He's a speciality player, but like I said in detail with Giordano, Wideman for GMs is the light version of this. That extra number 4 guy who can put some extra miles on the PP for you. If a GM is willing to overlook his high pay, he could fetch as much as a 2nd round pick. A third is much more likely.

Engelland - GMs may be sold on how well Engelland played when above his station during the Flames playoff push and run into the second round. For a guy most GMs would want as a #7, it's nice to see that he can play up to #3 for a game here and there when the time is right. I peg his value at a 5th round pick on trade deadline day.

Smid - Smid has no value of any kind. He is the fossil that nearly died in lockout 1, and was practically forced out with lockout 2. The irony is Smid is not that old, or that bad. Its just that his defensive awareness, physicality and grit no longer match up with the break-neck pace that the NHL is played at today. Injuries all play a role in Smid's career trajectory. I don't believe you could trade Smid for anything, except an AHL enforcer.

TLR
Giordano - Selling high within 3 years (1st round pick plus prospect)
Brodie - Basically anything you want. High scoring winger, 1st x 2, 1st++
Hamilton - 2nd x 2, or good young prospect
Russell - 4th round pick
Engelland - 5th round pick
Wideman - 3rd round pick
Smid - no trade value

Forwards, most all of them have some value. Raymond being the likely exception with his salary. Too many bodies to go through in this sitting. Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan top the list in terms of value. Everyone else ranks somewhere in-between. Maybe i'll write up forwards later if this doesn't get totally slammed. ha.
