Lemonade is one of the best albums in recent history. Takes Beyonce's music and pop music to the next level. She's unreal.

Andy Partridge is my favorite song writer, ever.

His new book "Complicated Game" shows how he wrote 30 great songs.

Last night I read how they did "Beating of Hearts". Every string on the guitars was tuned to the same note. They got these unique sounds - barring the frets, all the same notes. They played an electric signal through the board, and also had a mic near the strings to capture the acoustic sound of the strings at the same time. The drummer was asked to come up with an "India" beat.

The interviews for this book are also on-line:

http://chalkhills.org/articles/XTCFans20080428.html

AP: Well, I always wanted to do something with that buoyant, bobbing rhythm, but the whole song really came from the guitar tuning. I'd read somewhere that The Glitter Band had got the sound on their guitars by tuning every string to the same note, which they then played through a distortion pedal with a bottleneck. So, instead of chords, you had six notes [chuckles] sort of overdubbed simultaneously, if you see what I mean. I thought, "Well, that's a fantastic sound! I wonder what it's like to mess around with." So I just tried it -- I tried tuning every string to the note of E. I'd heard that they tuned to the note of A, but I thought I'd try it with E.
So, I was dragging the plectrum across the strings, and it sort of made a rhythm as you played -- drrrr-lang, drrrr-lang. Because it was all the same note.
TB: Right, but slightly different timbres, because you have different weights of strings.
AP: Different weights and thicknesses of strings, yeah. And then you just throw your hand on, in a straight barre, and you're playing -- well, not quite chords, because at best they can only be octaves of each other. So, they're not chords, and their not single notes, what are they? They're something else.

Many more, not in the book:

I'm a big fan as well. This sounds like a Dukes of Stratosphear track. I know the Monkees were a big influence so it's cool that they're collaborating.

I need to read that book!

have to say that RHCP song is pretty awesome. Didn't really expect anything great after Frusciante left and "I'm With You" was, as expected, a bit of a disappointment. But this sounds really good, hopefully the album will be great too. Doubt they can return to their previous heights, but hey, maybe I'm wrong.

What a week for new music! I've been digging the new albums from Drake, Skepta, Kaytranada, Death Grips and James Blake a lot. Plus a new Radiohead album in 2.5 hours :O

Good lord, A Moon Shaped Pool is amazing. Seems like just straightforward alt rock songs. Very pleased so far

I'm 4 tracks in now, I would not describe this as straightforward alt rock at all. Alt rock Radiohead would be The Bends imo. This is amazing so far though. I've been waiting so long for this! I'm so happy that Ful Stop, Identikit and True Love Waits have finally been released in full. Plus Burn The Witch at last. Man I love Radiohead

I would describe this as cinematic for sure. Johnny's soundtrack work is really shining here, in the best way possible

What I meant was no weird digital or electronic loops. But yes, not a lot of standard verse-chorus-verse chorus songs in there. Have listened a few times now and standouts for me are Burn the witch, Daydreaming, Identikit, and True Love Waits. Just realized- Is Burn the witch the only up tempo song on the album? Very mellow stuff otherwise and not a lot of crazy action by Phil Selway on this one. With the exception of Codex, I was not a big fan of King of Limbs from the beginning, but really enjoying this one.

Yeah it's kind of crazy that Burn The Witch is the most upbeat song on the album. The album flows extremely well. After the first listen, there are a couple tracks that I'm not sure are going to get very many spins on their own. With TKOL, I still listen to Codex/Lotus Flower/Separator constantly. My favourites so far on here are Burn The Witch, Daydreaming, Ful Stop, Glass Eyes and Identikit. True Love Waits is a little different from the live version. I like it for sure, I almost wish it were a little more acoustic though. I'm gonna give it a few more spins and see where I rank it among the rest of their albums!

Daydreaming is one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written. Holy cow

This is an old friend of mine. The music video will be out next week, I'm not sure if you can listen to the whole thing free right now. Let me know what you think.

Cool story about how it came about:
