I suspect that there is a much greater diversity of kid's names today than 40 years ago. When I was in elementary, Mike, Steve, Gord, Dave, Rob would collectively account for at least half the boys in my grade. I doubt the top five names today are anywhere near that popular.

My wife and I are in a Birth and Babies class right now, all 12 couples have had their kids now, and all 12 have normal names, it's great. Although, we're also all couples who took a baby class, so doesn't necessarily have the kind of people that go all unique for names (all late 20s early 30s and professional types).

I'm naming my first born son after whoever scores the Stanley cup winning goal for the Flames next cup.

My wife made a deal with me that if the Flames won the cup this year and Jiri won the Conn Smythe we were green lit to name our first born JIRIHUDLER. All one word. Personally I think we are both disappointed that this will not be happening.
