So why did they trade Kesler to a division rival again?

Different circumstances of course, but generally the team tearing it down and starting over should expect to get hosed.
Should add Hunter Smith and remove Macdonald.

because that was one of the few places Kesler would waive his full NTC for.

I think Sutter is better than Bonino. I think it also opens the door for Horvat to step into the top 6 and if he struggles, then Sutter takes on that role. I think it works well for them. He will see more powerplay time and I think will have more points this year than with Pitt.

Really the counting stats for Bonino and Sutter are identical (actually favour Bonino) and the advanced stats favour Bonino. Not even sure there is as much of a defensive difference between the two as you would expect.

Not to mention that there should be benefit of playing behind Malkin and Crosby 5v5 (with PP and SH time being relatively equal).

Bonino: 13:05 ES TOI
Sutter: 13:29 ES TOI

Bonino: 34 ES Points
Sutter: 24 ES Points

Bonino: PP TOI 1:51
Sutter: PP TOI 1:31

Bonino: 5 PP Points
Sutter: 5 PP Points

Bonino: 52 GA (13 PP GA)
Sutter: 51 GA (18 PP GA)

Bonino: 1:57 SH TOI
Sutter: 2:18 SH TOI

The fact that Bonino has produced more the last couple years, the cheaper contract, and the advanced stats make this look like a steal for Pitts before you consider they got a good prospect and a 2nd in return.

Pretty much the only place he agreed to go to, and the ducks knew it.

Yup. The Nucks' crappy return for Kesler was because the Ducks had their balls very firmly in the vise.

Gotta watch those NTCs.

HF Penguins is jumping for joy at this deal, while HF Canucks is thinking that it may be setting up for another move that involves offer sheeting Ferland (I kid you not ).

Yes, because nothing says 'setting up for an offer sheet' like trading a $1.9M C for a $3.3M C when you're already out of cap space!

(Clendening has no impact on their cap as it would have been either him or Corrado, and both have similar cap hits)

Benning seems to have trouble distinguishing between 17 year olds and 25 year olds with regards to how much improvement is possible at each age. He'll gladly hitch his wagon to a guy like Sbisa because he's a good skater and has good tools, but ignore that he has 300+ games at the NHL level of brutal play. Similarly with Sutter, he probably sees a guy with a good shot and who's good defensively and thinks he's a future top 6 forward, even though there's 500 games of evidence suggesting that he has largely topped out as a 25-30 point 3rd liner.

Personally I think the Nuckleheads made a great deal. Sutter is a great depth player, great speed, great PK, and could occasional contribute.

Bonino was a pure product of Getzlaf and Perry. Playing with those two you can turn chicken poop into chicken salad.

^^ This. Also good on matchups, usually played against top lines to free up Crosby/Malkin. Better skater, smarter than Bonino. Sutter given his limited to now PP time probably makes him a better offensive player than Bonino believe it or not.

Lets not kid ourselves. Pitt fans liked Staal, and Sutter isnt Staal, so they hated him. But Sutter doesnt make 6M, so it really isn't apples to apples. I shutter when fans started posting links to advanced stats as if its the 1A on how to build a team.

I still enjoy reading the HF Canucks and almost every poster has Sven slotted in as the 2nd line LW, haha, I just can't.

Sounds like Sutter is a better skater and isn't as soft as Bonino, so that could be an advantage for the Canucks in this trade. Something they are missing.

We will see what happens. I predict that Sutter will be the #2 centre this year. But I still think the Canucks miss the playoffs, so it doesn't matter that much really, he won't help this team win.

Really terrible deal. Biggest issue is adding Clendenning, who actually has top four potential. They have no other young guys coming up you can say that about. None.

Benning is at this stage arguably the league's worst GM. Impressive in just a year.

I'd take sutter over bonino any day.

To me it's like comparing Raymond to Bouma. One guy is a way more valuable player and it's not even close.

Bonino started out well last year but faded out towards the end and in the playoffs. Bradon Sutter was far more consistant

Okay, so we're pretty much on the same page in regards to the deal then. Thats exactly what I was thinking.
