Maclean was decent as an affable host. But watch a Maclean interview with Bettman (he used to do it every year) and you should conclude he doesn't have a lot of insight into the overall business of hockey. Bettman didn't have much respect for him IMO (and Bettman is a reasonable interview, if you listen to guys like Rob Kerr talk to him). And I have never seen him do a good analysis of a play or game.

I think different guys bring different strengths. Mackenzie is good at insider info, but I don't put much stock in his game analysis. Hrudey is terrific at analysis, but I doubt he knows much insider stuff except maybe about the Flames. Friedman is mostly insider stuff but his analysis is actually pretty good. Kypreos is getting better at everything.

Oilers have a lot of good young players. Now that they have a competent GM I could easily see them having quite a drastic improvement in a short time. The prediction really isn't that crazy. The NHL is so competitive these days though that it seems unlikely. Until someone proves to better than Chicago, LA, and Anaheim anyways.

The truthiness of the statement isn't what's funny. Four years is a long time and any one time could win it in that time frame. What people are laughing about is we've been hearing the same sort of predictions about the Oilers for the past decade.

Ugh..... I'm going to get slaughtered for this.

But when I saw Connor McDavid play live in Guelph I told my friends that whoever gets him will win the cup inside 5 years. The kid is unlike anybody I had ever seen live.

I sadly stand by that statement even though the oilers picked him.

While true, MacLean isn't an "idiot" for predicting it any more than Many posters here for predicting other things. It's sports and predicting an unpredictable future. The kids an enigma

Yeah, I suppose. I generally take any opinion Ron MacLean gives with a grain of salt. He's a great host, one of the best, but an an analyst I could do without him.

A friend recently brought up this McDavid thing, and I said well Pitsburgh for all their talent has only won once (definitely no dynasty). They probably won't win again given their situation. The Oilers also do not have a Malkin, or a defence, or even a Fleury level goalie (sad as that sounds)

He countered and said I see them as Washington west. The more I thought about it the more that makes sense. I think the Oilers are going to get better but like Washington their not a complete top down contender. I can see them following similar paths.

Building something special, it's just simple math, not a matter of if, but how many....

Keep the predictions coming, "analysts".

I don't get why everyone is getting so worked up. I love the Oiler hype-train. It has been so much more satisfying the last few years to watch them fall from their lofty expectations than if they just sucked and were expected to. Praise 'em up boys!

I am going to apply for his job I guess, if any random idiot can do it I could provide in depth analysis and fact based predictions (based on the CP braintrust) that would actually be closer to reality.
