I remember I was on a road trip listening to the radio and hearing the Flames had traded for Chris Drury back in '02. At the time, I was super excited Calgary was getting Drury. Stephane Yelle came along too. My mind was busily putting together line combinations and I was giddy. That didn't last of course.

A year or so later they traded Drury to Buffalo for Warrener and Reinprecht. I was stoked about Reinprecht too haha. That didn't last long.

IIRC the flames got to choose one of three recently picked players so calling it futures is not entirely true.

Also, who would have thought in that trade we would be giving up a multi cup winner.

This.

I was a kid when Lanny trade was announced and I remember being so excited. Lanny was a marquee player, one of the most popular players around, and a guy we had watched on HNIC for years with the Leafs. There may have (arguably) been better hockey trades, but this was a newsworthy event. I still remember the 89 Cup parade where Lanny was the centerpiece. True emotional connection with the fans and scorer of most memorable Flames goal of all time.

For some reason (maybe just being a contrarian young 20-something) I was neve as big on Lanny as most. I liked Nilsson better, and later, guys like Mullen and Gilmour. I figured he was on a downhill progression (and then he potted 60 LOL).

Agreed. Add in that Joey Mullen trade for us.
Kipper trade for 2nd round pick(Vlasic)

I hate Risebrough as a GM but love him as a player. He was a good faceoff man and good defensive centre and he can be annoying to play against. John Tonelli was a good pickup too. He brought some leadership to the team. Of course Lanny McDonald was by far one of the best trade Fletcher made.

At first I hated that Kent Nilsson trade for a draft pick that turned out to be Joe Nieuwendyk but after seeing Nieuwy played in his rookie year I was delighted. Sad to see one of my fave player got traded but at least Flames didn't just trade him for a bum. Of course we all know Nieuwy became one of the best Flame ever.
