Also ignores any acquisition cost - whether big or small - that the flames would give. No such cost with frolik.

I'd be quite disappointed if I were a Leafs fan.
That's the kind of return I would have expected with no salary retention.

It never would have been worth paying. Kessel has no work ethic, thinks offence all the time, is going to regress rapidly due to the fact he does not train in the off season, and even at a bit of salary retained is still a boat achor contract. Pittsburgh has put themselves in cap hell with the top end of their forwards and it will cost them big time when other teams destroy their bottom two lines.

Their window to win is now. While you still have your core in their prime you might as well go for it unless your going to start tearing it down and rebuilding Realistically they didn't give up a ton either. No players in this deal are likely to be high impact players other than Kessel. These contracts likely look like crap in 4-5 years but might as well go for it while you can.

Erixon gets traded again!
The only thing that would make this free agent frenzy any better is if Benning and his pal Weisbrod zero in on another one of their guys that they like disproportionately to how good the player actually is. Oh wait

Vancouver signs Matt Bartkowski, one-year, $1.75M. #TSN

Tom Erixon: 3 times as many NHL teams (6, if you include the Flames) as NHL goals (2).

More and more I look at this deal, it's a deal that does not help the Leafs for the future. They didn't get back good players, and they're hoping that late first rounder turns into something. At the end of the day, from the Leafs perspective it was a salary dump, not wanting him on the opening day roster.
As for Pittsburgh, they're throwing a hail mary that they can pull one off with a top heavy salary lineup. Kessel is a lazy guy who has a little more potential if he was fit, but they didn't give up much so it's fine. The term on Kessel's contract is a problem though and puts so much pressure on the Pens in the future. So, high risk for cap implications for the Pens.
Deal only helping Pens on the ice in the next couple years, and Leafs for the salary cap now. Not a good deal for both teams IMO.

I still think, had Erixon stayed in Calgary, a little stability would have gone a long way in for his career.
Brodie essentially took those minutes and became more than we expected Erixon could be.

Toronto retained 15% of Kessel's salary and cap hit. So, his hit for Pittsburgh will be $6.8 million.
