i don't think it's an 'in shape' type issue. the backing by the league suggests some unlawful off ice incident.

What did he do, kill someone?
Voynov beat the #### out of his girlfriend and it took months to get that contract suspended. If the NHL allows the team to terminate for something lesser, it's going to look really, really bad.

So lazy players now need to look behind them because the NHL has an out clause for players perceived lack of effort?

Yeah, I think the backing by the league suggests more that there are different rules when you run the NHL team located in Los Angeles.
League continues to be a complete amateurish joke of a tire fire.

Does this precedent mean that McDavid will be able to terminate any future NHL contract with the Edmonton Oilers at any time, simply be arguing they aren't living up to being an NHL team?

I could see this blowing up in LAs face big time. Both with punishment from the league ala Kovalchuk as well as ruining their reputation amongst players

I'm pretty confident there has to be more to this than a training issue. Very intrigued to find out how this plays out.

Actually I would think that anyone who want's out of Edmonton needs to be 300 pounds of pure fat and have McDonald's burgers running through their veins. And that's really not hard to achieve if you're dedicated in an off-season training program.

This doesn't pass the smell test.
This would set a very dangerous precedent for members of the NHLPA.
NHL owners would love this precedent on the other hand, goodbye guaranteed contracts.

after reading the FUTA comments, it sure sounds like conditioning is the issue.
so best case scenario here.
1) LA uses perceived cap space to sign sekerah
2) NHLPA protests
3) League rules that LA was not within their rights to terminate the contract
4) LA is forced to trade salary by league

That's the big thing for me. I don't want to see this league start heading in the direction of the NFL which is just horrendously immoral when it comes to player contracts

6) Too much time has passed for an actual buy out and they have to keep Richards on the books

somehow i don't think the the NHLPA legal team is going to be very emotionally moved by lombardi's "looked him in the eye" sing-song

In shape? Out of shape? WAYYyyy too subjective, and impossible to validate...so, unless Richards was involved in a felony, I can't see LA getting away with this, unless they make the real reason available to the League and the NHLPA...
