in 2012-2013 Gio had 15 pts in 47 games and was a -7... he was paid just over 4m for that season... Wideman had 22 pts in 46 games and was -9 getting 5.2M. After that season it was widely opined on CP that Wideman was untradeable and had one of the worst contracts in Flames history. Gio was definitely not overpaid at 4M in 2012-13
for the 2014 Olympic team he was talked about as a possibility if there were injuries... He was behind Jay Bouwmeester who had just extended with the Blues at 5.4 M Gio's 4 million in 2013-14 might have been 500k light but not enough to call it a huge bargain for the Flames.
Gio was underpaid last season 2014-15 but prior to his play last year nobody had him in the list of top 10 d-men in the league.

All top D-Men wil ask for that as a starting point. Just like Stamkos' starting point will be 10.5 million per.

Hahahahaha
If this rumor is indeed true, see ya later buddy!
There's no way we sign him to anything above 8 at his age and even then I'm more inclined to say 7-7.5.
It's not like he's proven himself year after year and he's getting older.
I hope this is false otherwise dangle him out there asap.

Chara is the only other mid 30's big contract Defense I can find and he got a little under 7.
That should be the comparison used. His contract isn't looking great right now either.

I doubt that contract will ever hurt, in the last year it will be around 6 percent of the cap limit in all likelihood (assuming around a 3 percent bump in the cap per year). It will be like paying a dman 4 million a year in today's dollars

For 2017-18 Assume the following:
Gio - 8.5
Brodie - 4.65
The Trio (Gaudreau/Bennett/Monahan) - 18.0
4th Forward - 5.0
3rd Defenseman - 4.0
Total - 40.15 on 7 players
Would be third behind only Chicago/Minnesota for highest cap hit on top 7 skaters and they are in cap trouble trying to unload big contracts.
Cap isn't going up forever.

I seem to recall that not only 2 years ago, there was a lot people on CP ready to trade Gio. Now it seems he is indispensable somehow. Don't get me wrong I think he's done a great job for the team this last year and a half and has been a great captain as well.
I don't think he'll end up with $9 mill/year, but I would dare venture to say that anything over AAV $7 mill/year is an overpayment for a guy that has played great for such a short period of time.
What happens if Gio signs for AAV $8.5/year for 4 years and then hovers around the 40 point mark for the length of that contract (which according to the last 3 or 4 full regular seasons would put him anywhere between 20th to 30th in defenseman scoring)? there are a lot of defensemen in that range that make considerably less than an AAV $8.5 mill. I think people will start to talk trade again.
or is the higher salary more for leadership than scoring?

His stock couldn't be higher right now...if he wants that amount lets get OEL and the 3rd overall for hudler, Gio and #15.

Only 3 years ago. Even add 3% a year. Still only 7.55

9M per - maybe on a 2 year deal...
I would say 7.5-8M per on 4 years, higher cap hit for a shorter term

... and if Mark Giordano was a 25y.o. already-won-a-Norris defenseman I'd have no problem giving it to him. But he ain't so I do.

Do a Kipper-like contract and front-load the thing while he is still capable. Have smaller amounts for future years.

The dollar amount doesn't mean much, it all comes down to term.

Huge no to that asking price. He hasn't even been nominated for a Norris. He has played like a Norris contender 2 years in a row but couldn't get in the top 3 by missing a quarter of the season both years.
Long term 5 years $6M or 2 years $7.5M. We could get a ton for him in a trade that is an option if he wants term and cash like this

Also have to remember that Gio's injury this year was a freak accident that rarely every happens in hockey, its not like he got hit by a routine check and shattered a bone.

I would take that with some context in mind. the shortened season you still had a lot of guys from the previous regime(s) lingering around. The flames were not a good team. different dynamic/different time.
Since then Gio has emerged as 'the guy' on and off the ice. if he were 3 years younger, 9 per is a lot easier to swallow. Gio-Brodie are an elite tandem, and that shouldn't change over the short term.
Gio is an important piece, personally I see them settling in the 8-8.5 range for the first few years of the deal, and maybe it is only a 3 year 24-27 million dollar deal, but he's earned it and he's worth it to this team.
If it is 9 for the short term, I won't be complaining. Further, it sends a message to the league that the Flames aren't afraid to reward their players.

There's no question the team's performance with Giordano as captain is a big part of Giordano's popularity. That popularity is going to take a hit the instant this extension is signed, regardless of term. You can see it starting to happen already in this discussion.
