He did work for SNet at 960 until about a year and a half ago...was Steinbergs afternoon partner. Came off a little gimmicky and goofy in a contrarian way at time, but he did great interviews and in hindsight made their lineup much more solid compared to now.

Enjoyable day at WinSport. So rarely get 1-on-1 interviews anymore but today at dev camp, had good chats with Morrison, McDonald, Jankowski.

Good article here by Haynes as well on the prospects.

FYI: Regarding Tyson Baillie, Kelowna C at dev camp on an invite. Since he's been thru the draft, any NHL team can sign him up until Aug 25.

Gillies article:
http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hock...ie-competition

Quote:
Being in Vancouver was the biggest eye-opener,” says Gillies. “You see how professional everyone is, how good of a teammate everyone is. Even though you’ve got guys competing for roster spots, you’ve got everyone supporting each other, taking each other under their wings, picking them up when they’re down. It was really cool — the camaraderie. It’s a special group, you can tell for sure.”

Name-checking a half-dozen of the Flames’ greenhorns, Gillies says he is impressed by the way the newcomers asserted themselves — earning jobs, making impacts.

“There’s a really, really good young core in place,” he says. “It was really fun to watch from afar, and it was also fun to be a part for a little bit. Hopefully, I can be a part of it going forward.”

With Karri Ramo re-upping, the Flames have three goalies on one-way deals, including Jonas Hiller and Joni Ortio.

Where does that leave Gillies?

The youngster isn’t interested in making public declarations about stealing jobs.

“I’ve always just gone with the flow — anyone that knows me can tell you that,” says Gillies. “I’ve never got caught up in that. Obviously, you’re in competition when it comes down to it, but you never root against a person, you never root against a teammate. You want the team to do well, first and foremost. I’m just trying to play my game and let the chips fall where they may.”

Starting now.

He’s one of four goalies on the premises.

“It’s obviously the beginning of July, but you want to leave a good impression,” says Gillies. “You want to hit the ground running going into September.”

I'll say it right now, Gillies is already a more articulate and thoughtful interview than 99% of today's NHLers.

Isn't Anders Nilsson the rookie the Isles started in Crosby's first game back in like 14 months? And predictably Sid lit him up for two or three points in the first frame?

Meet Money and Johnny, Anders.

Video interesting things for me:

-Rasmus Andersson was even in a worse shape 2 years ago. He knows he has to get a lot better still.

-Jakub Nakladal thinks the coach in Prague 2 years ago didn't like him so didn't get much ice-time. He has to keep his head clear and make the coach trust him.

-Adam Ollas Mattsson's english is really good.

-Emile Poirier already training hard with bunch of different NHL players in Montreal. He might just win out a spot.

-Garnet Hathaway points to Huska really helping him pick out smaller things. Good guy, helping out younger guys as well.

You really get the sense of high character in a lot of these guys. Hathaway and Gillies speak very well and come across as very genuine.

I just get more and more excited with each passing day.

They'll have to coach that out of him. Can't have any hockey players with personality.

Pucks in deep! Huge 2 points!
