Okay let me rephrase that. To play with more size, physicality AND possession, the Flames need to look for other options at the 2/3 C spot. Especially with Backlunds value being arguably the highest it's ever been.

Klimchuk is coming off his best season in juniors by a wide margin. I'd like to see what he can do in training camp. Plus he started playing his off-wing and his offensive production didn't suffer at all, in fact it improved. As long as he and Poirier show they can line up on RW and be effective I think they're safe.

As for next year's Jooris, I think Agostino stands a good chance of being that.

The more I think about it, the less I see a "Jooris" happening. For a "Jooris" to happen, a "Setoguchi" also needs to happen barring an early season ending injury to a forward

Outside of that basically anyone but brodie, bennett, monahan, johnny and poirier should be considered.
I don't get why Klimchuck would even be considered movable. He is one of our most versatile prospects from everything I have heard he will be a player that will be able to play anywhere in the lineup from top 6 to bottom 6. The thing is this isn't the first time Inahe heard this notion. He is frequently a toss in when Flames fans are taking trade on HF.

Monohan, Gaudreau, Brodie, Bennett and untouchable and after this season I now want to add Ferland and Bouma to that list. I also wouldn't want the Flames to trade any players who have little to no NHL experience as their potential is unknown. Considering that the following young players are expendable:

Colbourne, Granlund, Jooris, Ortio, Reinhart, Shore, and Wotherspoon.

In what way is Ortio expendable?

Those package deals only seem to happen in nintendo games. It would be nice to get a roster player for a couple of 3rd line AHLers and a pick but I just don't see that happening. If any of those guys are traded it would likely be for another AHL player with similar value. Like Ramholt for Greentree.

I'd imagine that a few of the RFAs will not be qualified. New guys like Smith, Kanzig, Gillies etc will take their place. There are only so many spots. Can't keep them all. But getting back good assets for these cast offs in a trade is a pipe dream.

Lets be real the last time Nintendo released an NHL series on one of their platforms was 2010 and was complete crap.

Considering the variability of goalie career trajectories Ortio is definitely expendable even with some of his bright showings. Sure he might turn into a good starter but there is also a risk consistency issues become a problem and he is nothing more than a career backup. If Ortio could be packaged to upgrade the goaltending I would want the Flames to take that chance. This is also why I put Wotherspoon on the list. He has the potential to be a top 4 defence but may never reach that and should be considered as a trade candidate in a package to upgrade the D.

I didn't think the idea was to pick AHL players who have little chance of making the big leagues and have no trade value. They are expendable by definition but are not an asset from the perspective of a trade return. This is why I only included players such as Granlund, Wotherspoon, and to a lesser extent Reinhart. They could actually be packaged in a realistic trade or could be traded for 2nd or 3rd round picks would could later be packaged in another trade.

Very similar to the Panthers and top-10 Hobey Baker Finalist Corbin Knight. The Panthers got a 4th round pick from the Flames, They had drafted him as a 5th round pick and had exactly the same time invested as the Flames do with Jankowski. Kind of had to be some sort of tampering with Knight as the Flames gave up a 4th round pick and he still could have signed with someone else. ... or maybe the panthers asked him who the heck he was going to sign with.

The absolute floor for asset management for the Flames that since Jankowski was a first round pick they get a 2nd round in the same spot they drafted him in the first (#51 overall in 2017).

Nobody would give Chicago a higher pick than the #54 they got for compensation for Kevin Hayes not signing with them. Hard to give much when the guy still might not sign with you.

Just curious if anyone knows how the 2017 draft is, is it deep? Is a 2nd round pick worth more than Jankowski? If he projects to be a 3rd liner, we might be better off with the draft pick.
He projects to be a 3rd liner because our first two centres are Monahan and Bennett.

He's Backlund's replacement, IMO. Eventually, I think Backs gets dealt for a defender.

I'm obviously not winning any arguments here. What I am trying to say is that there is risk trading any young player but it is much less risk trading someone with more NHL experience as you have a better idea of their value. I had to draw the line somewhere and decided guys like Wotherspoon, Ortio and Granlund have enough experience while Poirier needs a little more and wouldn't be considered.

I would prefer if all the Flames young players turned into superstars but there are only so many roster spots and it is inevitable some will not be with the team long term. Why not consider a trade if it helps the team? For example what if Chicago wanted to create cap room by making Crawford available? You would seriously have to consider sending Ortio the other way.

Granlund is expendable... unless Markus becomes the Flames 2nd line left winger, otherwise most likely not enough size for a top two centre or a bottom six centre/winger either.

Jooris vs Granlund vs Shore. All are centres, but will need to be able to play on the wing if they want to have a long term future. I think you pick two and try to move the third, as there is only so much room on the roster, especially with Bennett making the jump.

Jooris brings some size, speed and grit. Hartley loves his PK ability, and his early offence was a bonus. Granlund probably brings a little more offensive upside, but is still sound defensively. Don't really see him as an energy guy though. Haven't seen enough of Shore to comment. I think Jooris stays, which means its Granlund vs Shore in training camp.

I also wonder if Klimchuk has some trade value right now. I think he can be a very very good player, but he's another smallish top 6 forward... is that going to cut it against the "big" teams in the west? I have to think that there are teams that would want him -- the question is whether any would pay the steep price it would take to acquire him?

PS I would love love love it if Mason Raymond can find his game next year. Love.

He's movable if you think the team needs a young defence prospect of similar caliber.

Or, we can keep him and draft defenseman in this draft.

Besides, we picked a pretty good one in 2014 with Hickey.

A defenceman drafted this year is 4-5 seasons away from being a reliable NHL blue liner. And we need a bunch of Hickey-level prospects on defence, because most of them probably won't pan out.
