Will there be competitive balance complaints in the future if the Leafs can hire all the best off-ice talent?

Works for the owners. Coaches cost skyrocket = bad for owners. Someone on Fan the other day (maybe Friedman?) mentioned that Gary has worked really hard to keep coach salaries down. Current highest is Quennville somewhere in the 3's so this is basically doubling the bar.

How many coach salaries are the Oilers currently paying?

It is kind of funny but for all the love that Babcock gets he has only won one Stanley Cup (lost two other times in the finals).

Did great work in Detroit but do wonder if his reputation is buoyed by being the guy selected to coach stacked olympic teams (that also had all-star coaching staffs).

Will be interesting to see how he does in building his own team culture outside of Detroit. In Detroit he really carried on in the culture that was built by Bowman/Holland but didn't have to build it himself.

No no, I'm pretty sure Babs is the real deal.

Wings were supposed to have missed the playoffs this season, he squeezed every last ounce out even changed their style of play to accomplish this.

EDIT: I need to add that I am not saying even he can pull of miracles with the Leafs they suck.

But Babcock is an awesome coach for sure. 50 mil awesome? I don't think anyone is that awesome.

So basically what I'm saying is... ummm... yeah! This reeks of morale debate lol

according to who? they still have some pretty good players...they were a bubble team and got bounced in the first round. Pretty average result considering the talent if you ask me

He'll be crucified if he doesn't have success after this contract.

I doubt that the fanbase or the media will show much patience. He may get a few months but if the team is seriously under-performing next season I expect Babcock will feel the wrath of Toronto before the season is out.

Well it should be entertaining - call-in shows after the first three game loosing streak.
Living in Ontario my only fear is that somehow somewhere someone is going to try and get me to pay for part of that salary (like as part of the Hydro bill or education tax ...even if I try to go without cable and telephones).

What's greater, Babcock's contract or how much the Argos were purchased for today?

So what's the compensation? I hope the Leafs have to cough up some high draft picks too.

Oh Toronto and Edmonton,

The team will never win with Dion as captain so 6 years of guaranteed suck from Toronto. Dion is an ok hockey player, a decent 4th or 5th dman but on Toronto he's a boat anchor dragging the team to the bottom. It's not even his fault, Toronto gambled and lost big time. Franchise destroying move. Nothing Babcock will be able to do with him there.

Now watch Detroit pick a future Hall of Fame player with that pick. It would be such a Detroit thing to do.
