out of curiousity, what would you do with all of your personal stuff in your house while you are renting it to a AirBnB user?
i am talking about things like credit card statements, income tax papers, watches, other jewellery etc.
I have rented places from VRBO before, and usually in each unit there is a locked storage closet that presumably contains the owners stuff that they don't want anyone to use - that seems easy for a vacation rental, but in your house you have a lot more stuff to stash away.

The only way I'd do this is if I bought a property for the sole purpose of renting it out, and after years of getting other people to pay for it, I get rid of all the contents and reno it before moving in or using it as a vacation home.

You've made this point three separate times now. It's almost like you're trying to convey you wouldn't be interested in using this service...

If I was the homeowner I would of been more upset that I at least didn't receive a invite to the drug induced orgy....

That would be terrible.
It's hard enough having a party at your house and dealing with people not wiping their feet and having bad aim in the bathroom. I wouldn't want to have worry about breaking up hot carling in the hallway or seeing people using the good china for things I don't even want to get into here.

I guess my gripe is with the owner saying "Our home is our sanctuary." If it is such sacred ground to you, why are you inviting unsupervised strangers into it, for a few measly dollars? Especially if you have children. I guess I have a very different idea of sanctuary.
There are so many things that could go wrong, with a service like this if you have children. I use VRBO all the time in Maui, but those are designated rental properties, not someones personal home. I would feel like a creepy intruder in someones primary residence like that.
Dumbass renter puts cleaning chemicals from a child proof cupboard back in a non child proofed cupboard.
They bring lice into your home and your child gets it.
They let their unvaccinated child that has chicken pox or some other communicable disease in your babies playpen.
Some sort of drugs fall out of their pocket into the couch cushion like E, and the kid mistakes it for candy, or even a prescription medication.
Some dude is a total psycho, and buries razor blades in the play pen.
etc, etc, etc........
Sorry, if your home is your 'Sanctuary' you don't give full run of it to complete strangers. I can total get it, if you are a bachelor/bachlorette, and the worst that happens is they jack your PS4 and Kuerig, but in my opinion, a responsible parent would not allow complete strangers in their home.
This exact scenario proves how useless the vetting process is with this service. Just because people like it, doesn't make it the greatest thing ever. There are clearly gaping holes in the system.

Reading the original article again, I didn't realize that the owners were actually sitting in Calgary the whole time. They basically rented out their home and went to live with their parents just a little bit of cash.
I can totally see people enjoying using the service themselves but I'd have to be REALLY strapped for cash to let people in my house like that. Hell, I'm not sure I'd go back to staying over my parents place for the money alone - forget the renters.

That's four times now. I think everyone gets how you feel loud and clear.
Point is, not everyone feels the way you do. It makes total sense, and I wouldn't rent my personal dwelling out either, but thousands do without issue and it's why the site exists, does well, and many people in this thread (myself included) use it with great success.

Wow. On the fence about renting it out again? I wonder how pylon would feel about that...

meh, what are the odds of renting it out twice and having that happen again.
Did they ever find and charge the people that rented and trashed it?

I heard an interview with the husband on CBC yesterday and he said that the police are pursuing fraud charges against the person who rented - the initial charges were to be more about destroying the house, but there appears to be a lack of eyewitnesses as to who was destroying the place, so fraud seems to be a more concrete charge. The way he talked, it sounds like they know who the person is as the husband mentioned something about previous charges for using fraudulent credit cards.

A Calgary family is getting ready to move back into their home after it was trashed four months ago by people who rented it through Airbnb.
"I think we wouldn't be freaked out to rent again."
|
I think it's sad they trashed his clothes too and left him one terrible cardigan.
