Between Ortio, Macdonald and Gillies, our goaltending situation down the road looks pretty great. I feel just as great about it as I do our centre situation. I have a feeling we'll either have a good 1A/1B tandem, or one of them will pull away and become a real good #1 in the NHL.

Yup, and those aren't just old pads he's worn before. His Providence pads had black and silver, and his Team USA pads were red, white, and blue with stars on them.
I'm surprised he doesn't already have a painted mask.
His screaming eagle mask from the World Juniors was really nice, so I can't wait to see what he comes up with for the Flames.

Gillies has always seemed like a stylish, equipment loving guy. I recall him asking fans on Twitter which pads he should use.

Stupid question I get that but I just find it funny that they all need their own water bottle?
Are they all germaphobes or is there something big I am missing here?
Edit: I mean ya, what Circa said

I believe it was a health concern that came to light when players started coming down with the flu earlier this year.

I love this signing, but I'm starting to get tired of these ncaa guys holding you over a barrel and getting a whole year off their contract for one or no games. It's fantastic to see guys like Johnny (and now John) progress to the point that multiple teams want them( like every prospect is supposed to do), but all these guys have to do to get max contracts and a 2 yr entry deal is threaten to go back to school for a 4th year

If he would have signed after his 4th year, it would have been a 2 year entry level deal anyways, it's really not any skin off the Flames back.

While I agree with your point, for Gillies and Gaudreau the Flames were burning a year that they were going to lose anyways.
For an ELC the CBA specifies the following lengths (age as of September 15 on the year they signed):
Age 18-21 -> 3yrs
Age 22-23 -> 2yrs
Age 24-> 1yr
Both Gillies and Gaudreau are/were 21 when they signed their ELCs and therefore got 3 year ELCs. If they both went back for their senior year they would have gotten 2 year ELCs from the Flames or whoever ended up signing them.
So technically the Flames were burning a year they were going to lose anyways and prevented them from getting to UFA.

Since the players don't get paid anything more than a per diem during the playoffs, all it costs them is his signing bonus for this season. I haven't seen his contract details, but even if it's a maximum ELC, it will be $92,500.
Also, for a guy who isn't likely to make the immediate jump to the NHL, he'll likely get paid less in 2017-18 in the first year of his second contract than he would if it was the final year of his ELC.
That's the risk for the player in that situation. If he's likely to spend a couple of years in the AHL before cracking the NHL full time, he could be costing himself money on his second contract to get an extra signing bonus now.
This is also a reason why teams don't seem overly hesitant to burn the first year.
