I thought Hail to the Thief had its moments too.

Now I like his music. Funny how that works.
Reggae sounds way better when you are at a tropical beach. It's kind of tough to listen to in the middle of winter in Canada.

The Tragically Hip are pretty generic and they pretty much have the CRTC to thank for their success. They came along at a time perfect time when there was a lull in Canadian rock music and benefited because radio stations had to have Canadian content. To me, they are the perfect example of if you play it enough on the radio, people will start liking it.

If they were formed in the U.S., they would have quickly been swept under the rug.

Lady Gaga definitely has musical talent though, she's way beyond Carly Rae Jepsen and girls like that. Just check out some of her old stuff when she played in clubs. She's just got a ton of drive and motivation.
Check her out back when she was just Stefani Germanotta band.

Radiohead are just outright boring and Yorke's vocals are like nails on a chalkboard. I recognize that they're incredibly talented musicians, but I just can't get the widespread appeal. Same with Tool.

I've said it here before, but Pearl jam is 20% acceptable and 80% filler.

Jay-Z has a better career than Nas. But Nas is clearly the better lyricist.

I don't like Modest Mouse at all, never have and never will. I don't like the singers voice.

I have to disagree with you on that... Sloan is awesome for the fact that all four members write and sing their own songs as opposed to having one lead singer sing it all. Twice Removed is the third greatest Canadian album after Neil Young's Harvest and After the Gold Rush.

That reminds me.. Roger Waters is a ######nozzle and although Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all time the only thing he was good for was writing lyrics. Dehydrated Floyd still musically sounds like classic Floyd.

I think this is a very standard opinion of the Tragically Hip and their success. I also think this statement holds true for a great many Canadian bands. Nickleback has to be the worst example of CanCon laws making stars of Generic Rock & Roll.

That said, Up To Here, Road Apples, and Fully Completely are all amazing albums and They are still one of the best live bands I've seen.

They've sold over 5 million records. Sure maybe CRTC rules helped them starting out I don't know I wasnt around then, but only a handful of artists (from any country) have sales figures like that in Canada. I dont think a mediocre band propped up by radio play could accomplish that.

I dont know how anyone can hate Sloan. One Chord to Another is Canada's Rubber Soul.

If Roger Waters had any sort of singing voice nobody would hate Pink Floyd.

I would agree.
Particularly as with regards to "Road Apples", which is pretty much their peak (IMHO).
The fact that Gord's voice is/was "unique", and falls outside the accepted norms should not detract from the brilliance of the songwriting on the early albums. The fact that it is (quite obviously to a musician's ear) cut live off the floor is something that remains more akin to the "classics" that I grew up with in the '70's and 80's. As a guitarist/vocalist? Some of the better times I've had were spent cranking out "Twist my Arm", "Little Bones", and "Fight"...all from the Road Apples album. It's not brain surgery, but if you can get two guitar players together, that each learn the lines as recorded?
It's magic on stage.
There is something there that had SFA to do with "Can-Con" laws.

As for the OP? I hate everything that doesn't involve wires and wood.

Enough said.

CSB: My band does Born in the Water. Never would have even thought of it but my friend taught me the slide parts and the harmonies. It's actually a fantastic song.
