I think the Flames need another skilled player to play with him - like one of those Red Army players that can go east-west / north-south in a hearbeat. Gaudreau's got great vision and moves on the ice, but without linemates that can feed off of each other consistently, it'll be kind of wasted. Monahan is a good centerman, but most of the time, he's just a north-south guy and there's a lot of missed opportunities between him and Johnny in those really tight games. If you get another guy who can read Gaudreau nicely (like Zetterberg and Datsyuk), I can see over 100/season for both players, easily.
Maybe that happens with Bennett. But also remember that Monahan is a sophomore and younger than Johnny. He plays a simple game because that's how you start. I expect his game to grow as well. PLus, look at what they've done together already as rookie and sophomore. They aren't going to score on all their chances but Johnny is the top scoring rookie and Monahan's in the top 10 in goals in the league. I'd say they are meshing very well.

I think it's somewhat telling that the only guy that really got a big piece of him this season was Datsyuk. Similar elusive small skilled guy. He can probably read him better than almost anyone.
I think Johnny will be a 70-80 point guy most years with perhaps a few outlier years up or down.
Yeah I'm not anymore concerned about him getting hurt then I am with other guys. He's not made of glass. The amount of padding and protection players wear and quality of that protection should keep him safe from clean hits.
He's no more in danger of getting a big concussion then any other player. In fact he is probably used to being a target.
Hey bingo your next qotd should be the same question about monahan. Johnny is meeting my high expectations so far but it's actually Mony that is really surprising me this year.

I think some people are missing the poll question, its not asking what his ceiling is next year, but his ceiling career wise. I tend to think 30+ goals, 90 points but he's obviously got potential to go even higher.
This kid is just amazing. Just imagine what it will be when he fills out some more and once Mony and Sammy B. hit their stride. I think we are just seeing the tip of the ice berg right now. Johnny is everything and more.
I have no doubt that Gaudreau has the talent, I just think he's going to become a target for shutdown specialists unless we have a viable second line. Here's hoping a duo of Poirier-Bennett has similar success next season.
What are these shutdown guys doing this year? Pretty clear every team has been playing their shutdown guys against Hudler/Gaudreau/Centre (now Monahan) all year long unless they are coached by a tree stump.

What makes Gaudreau so special is his vision of the ice and uncanny ability of knowing where players are. In some ways he reminds of Gretzky and the way he was able to create plays. He makes the players around him so much better and I think is part of the reason why Hudler is having a career season. You can't teach that stuff, either have it or you don't.
Calgary's shooting ability (percentage) is already extremely high, it's more about players not expecting the pass and not getting a shot off at all. If Calgary could find a true sniper (50 goal threat) the sky really is the limit
Monohan is looking more and more like a sniper these days. But I do agree a guy like James Neal would be a great compliment to gaudreau's game. Or even Iginla.
Iginla from 10 years ago maybe, but I could see any player meshing with JG. He makes others better around him. I think Hudler and JG compliment Monahan very nicely. I think Bennett will add another dimension to those three as well. I think Bennett will be a little bit more high flying than Monahan, which might also elevate JG in the future.
Getting a good, top 6 RW will really help these guys, but Iginla doesn't fit in this team anymore. Young and fast.

People don't think of Monahan as a typical "sniper" like say Ovechkin or Stamkos because his style of play and shot is so different. But, his shot is so deadly. Just picks his spot, and smoothly snaps home shots with great accuracy. No wasted movements whatsoever.

Jesus man, you need to write out "MonAhan" like 1000 times or something to get this mono out of your system.

I went with "even higher", as I think his real potential is in the number of his assists. He is constantly setting guys up with his exceptional ability to pass, and as Calgary's shooting ability improves with the addition of guys like Bennett, I believe his numbers could explode.
Hudler is 3rd in the league for shooting percentage and Monahan is 11th. Gaudreau is 50th.
I think Gaudreau has room to improve, but it won't be through shooting percentage, other than perhaps his own.
To answer Bingo's QotD, what we should really be asking is: How can Gaudreau's line generate more shots?
^That's a bit much. Kid is not going to be Jarome Iginla.
I guess this really depends heavily on what you mean by that. I absolutely agree in that Gaudreau is a completely different kind of player who will never do the things that Iginla did with regularity. But by the same token, he is and will continue to do things that Iginla simply could not.
In other words, Gaudreau could very well end up having the same—perhaps an even greater impact in the Calgary market than Iginla ever did. It's saying a lot in the light of much Iginla meant to Calgary, but Gaudreau really is potentially that good.

Yeah, if there's anything he needs to work on, it's finishing his chances. Funnily enough, that's one area of his game where he doesn't seem to be as creative...he's almost downright predictable anytime he gets a chance in alone, 90% of the time trying to slip the puck in through the 5 hole.
I think this is part of him learning to play in this league. By his sophomore season at BC, he was starting to do things at full speed and in tight that he wasn't doing in his rookie season. And then last year, he was making just simply stupid-level impossible plays, like this one:
I think after another year or two his ability to break down defenders and score one-on-one will get better.

You are right, he will never be a power forward. Skill wise, he will be better than Iginla, there is no doubt. Might not be the goal scorer Iggy was but he will put up more points.
