How would he be handled under the cba if he had been a year younger in his freshman year? Would he become ufa earlier than most, or does the 4 years at college still apply?

cba:
Quote:
if a player drafted at age 20 or older is a bona fide college student at the
time of his selection or becomes a bona fide college student while his
drafting club retains exclusive rights, then his drafting club shall retain
those rights until the later of: (a) the second june 1 following the date of
his selection, or (b) thirty (30) days after nhl central registry receives
notice that the player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided
that if the player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced
his fourth year of ncaa eligibility and the player ceases to be a bona fide
college student on or after january 1 of an academic year, or (2) is in his
fourth year of college, is scheduled to graduate from college at the end of
his fourth year and the player ceases to be a bona fide college student on
or after january 1 of an academic year, or (3) remains a bona fide college
student through the graduation of his college class, then in the
circumstances described in (1) or (2) or (3), the club shall retain the
exclusive right of negotiation for such player's services through and
including august 15 of that calendar year.

We could always use more defensive prospects

Sure would be a nice shot in the arm on the defensive prospect front.
With the way Hickey and Rafikov are starting to shape up, and adding Morrison along with Wotherspoon, and then hopefully score a couple good picks in June, and suddenly things are looking a lot better.
As for how this affects Wotherspoon - the only way it does is increased competition. And if that is a problem for Wotherspoon, then maybe he doesn't have what it takes.
What I see is two pretty big (both 6'2"), good skating, puck moving defensemen that could become a heck of a defense pairing. Wotherspoon is smart and Morrison has a cannon.

Seems like more of them are sticking now though. Maybe NCAA is better developing some of these guys.
Krug, Dekyser, Folin are some recent examples of picking up solid Dmen out of the NCAA.

No love for our Brodie-clones Kulak and Culkin?

More like Knight and Van Brabant.
I'm not saying this is a bad pick up, just that I've stopped getting excited over these NCAA free agent guys like I used to.

Didn't we get Drew Shore for Knight? Seems like a great pick-up.

When Calgary can churn out fantastic late bloomer defencemen like Gio, Brodie, and now Russell, it must certainly help to sway potential free agents who want to develop into impact players

Who wouldn't want to turn into an impact player?
But this is a good point. We have had some luck with late bloomers.

I think the chances of the other guys becoming NHLers is higher than it is with these guys. Just my opinion but I don't have them as having a tremendous amount of upside.
Never know with defensemen though, that's why more is better.

Knight was drafted, so not a free agent.
His point was Glencross and Jooris are examples of undrafted college free agents.
And yes... a lot won't work out, but Jooris was a great (free) pickup.

We traded for Knight who was drafted, and then flipped him back for Shore, who's an NHLer.
Van Brabant might not be an NHLer but I'd say Garnet Hathaway will be. Bottom liner but an effective one.
Jooris is already an effective 3rd liner, and should be more effective when he gets to scoot over to Backlund or Bennett's wing.

I wouldn't call Brodie a late bloomer. This is the fourth straight season where he'll play more than half the Flames' games and he hasn't even celebrated his 25th birthday. If anything, he was an early bloomer.
Russell was also an NHL regular at the age of 20 and had more than 300 NHL games under his belt before he joined the Flames. He struggled in St Louis, but had decent stats in Columbus. Now, he's 27, which is about the age where defencemen hit their prime.

Knight was an impending Free Agent.
In the Flames eyes it was pretty close. Sure we traded him for a better player but doesn't make Knight any better.

I see no harm in giving this kid a shot if he is willing to come to Calgary.
He could replace Potter.

If we get him it will be a similar scenario as to when we signed Brady Lamb out of college a few seasons ago. Didn't work out with Lamb but always worth a shot
