So what? In a 30 team league with a cap, many great players will never win one Cup, let alone multiple. Do think the Penguins would have been better off the last nine years with Kopitar or Toews instead of Crosby?

So I think it's a 30 team league with a cap where many great players will never win one cup, let alone multiple. And the only thing I care about is for the Calgary Flames to win a cup. And Connor McDavid neither ensures that nor necessitates it.

Would it be awesome to have McDavid? Sure.

But all of a sudden going into a fetal position because Crosby dominated the Flames in one regular season game? Call me again when he does that for an entire postseason and single handedly wins his team a Stanley Cup. Hell, the only time he won it, it was his teammate that got the Conn Smythe.

So after we draft McDavid, do we need to tank again for the next Malkin?

When's the last time anyone singlehandedly won his team the cup? Gretzky couldn't do it so why would you expect Crosby to?

uh.... Kevin Lowe in 84, 85, 87, 88, 90 and 94. That guy knows how to win.

Where did I say the Flames should tank in the hopes of getting McDavid? I'm simply pointing out, as a hockey fan, that generational talents like Crosby (and like McDavid looks like he may very well become), are special players. Last night was an example of how they can impact games the way simple stars only occasionally do. People have questioned what the big deal is about McDavid compared to McKinnon or even a Tavares or Stamkos. We just saw what the big deal could be.

I know some people on this board only engage with hockey through the lense of the Flames, but some of us are hockey fans as well.

Fair enough if you were addressing people who can't differentiate between a Taveres and a Crosby, although I personally thought that you were sort of stating the obvious. Someone earlier in the thread posted this:

The Pens showed the Flames management why they need to tank to take advantage of the draft system.
Which combined with your post I mistook your meaning. Yes, the absolute best players are incredible. (but so are their cap hits)

The Pens have beaten Montreal 4-0, Tampa by a couple decent scores, and some crap teams by a lot. So they certainly are capable of beating the Flames handily if the Flames don't play well. So no alarm bells for me.

Mind you, it's not like they are a powerhouse team this year though. They don't have a great record against some of the better teams. They just got spanked by Nashville and the Caps (4-0 each time).
