I would love Boychuk. Wasn't all that angry that we didn't trade for him but now that our team has performed well I think he is a perfect target for us. Please test the market

I think Boychuk is happy with the Isles. I'd like to throw money at Green since we have the cap space to take him. traded Wideman to a team that wanted him and signed Green for 3-5 years, 7-7.5m per. Green is a huge upgrade to Wideman.

I think Green is only a very slight upgrade on Wideman.

Conroy said this morning they are not interested in rentals this year, nor are they doing anything but rebuilding. It's not win now time yet.

I never said trade for Green. He wouldn't be a rental if we are signing him 3-5 years.

Heading into next season there's definitely room to solidify the defense both via FA and the farm.

For my money I'd be ecstatic id the Flames 7 D-men shaped up like this:

Gio-Brodie
Wideman-Russell
Franson/Green-Wotherspoon
Engelland

If you can trade for one of Green/Franson before deadline day with the idea to sign them to an extension in the range of 2-3 years I would hope they would take the chance at it.

I'd rather target defencemen in the 24-25 age group than a guy who will be 30 when signed. That was the impression from Conroy as well this morning.

We need to improve our high-end talent, not our depth talent.
I'd love to get Joel Ward because he's a right winger and this team needs right wingers.

He'd be our 2nd best natural right winger on this team (behind Hudler). He'd be a good fit because of that. Furthermore, he seems to play a style that would also be a need for the Flames, as in a big body who can play in front of the opponents net and cause an opposing goalie problems.

I get the risk with him already being 34 years old and that he'll be 35 next December, but I get the feeling he isn't like most typical 34 year old NHL players who have truly slowed down by that age. This guy's a late bloomer. I think he's worth a shot at a 1 or 2 year deal for up to $5mil a year.

1. Ribiero
2. Franson
3. Green
4. Dubnyk
5. St. Louis

7. Vermette
8. Martin
9. Ehrhoff
10. Beleskey
11. Niemi

Looks like Ramo is arguably the 3rd best goaltender on the UFA market after Dubynk and Niemi.

UFA crop looks really weak this year. And probably a couple more of those will still re-sign, making it even worse.

Good luck to edmonton finding the four top 4 defensemen they need.

With the mutual success Dubnyk and the Wild have had since he went there, I cannot see how he does not get signed by Minnie before UFA. It's kind of like Boychuk and the Isles to me, it's just a really good fit.

I can't imagine the Wild letting Dubnyk get to free agency, and after the treatment he received the last couple of years, he'll likely welcome signing somewhere that he has fit in nicely.

I would like to see him go to July 1 just for the inevitable stories about how much more money the Oilers offered him than what he actually ends up signing for after telling the Oilers to go screw themselves.

Gotta feeling that the flames will be after one of the top 3 dmen. My order of preference would be Green, Martin , Franson. Actually I hope flames stay away from Franson. No chance he can live up to the contract he signs this summer. Green would fit in well with Hartely's system. Would be a big upgrade on the #5 spot and he could fill in up the order if injuries occur, which is inevitable.

Green is like a less responsible Wideman, no? Do we need that? Id take Paul Martin

I don't see it... I think one thing Gio's injury showed us is how Wideman and Russell can really step up and fill a role. I think the idea to keep Wotherspoon in the AHL the entire year, is to promote him next year so I see him taking a spot. Something like :

Gio - Brodie
Russell - Wideman
Wotherspoon - Engelland
Schlemko

Kind of how I see it... not sure what happens to Diaz, I have a bad feeling about Smid's injury. So... I'm not sure I see us really going out and (overpaying) for a D. I think Schlemko will be heavily looked at for a bottom pairing role.

Not much on that UFA list interests me... I think I'd rather try and save our money (maybe take a 1 year cap dump) and try and resign our FA's the year after. I'm not sure much of that list is a better option then even keeping our guys like Kris Russell, David Jones, etc.

It was reported all year that the flames were looking to improve the D. I don't think they are going to stop looking especially in the summer when it won't cost them picks or prospects. I also don't see this management and coaching group giving a spot to Wotherspoon when he has not played one NHL game this year.

Yes, but as I said above, some players stepped up and showed they can fill a bigger role (press box to big minutes), some players were added, some young D have developed more (and by all accounts, done very well) ... and you almost always have to overpay for a UFA unless its a reclamation project, see: Engelland.

Unless you mean that UFA is Doug Murray of coarse...

Injuries always happen so improving our d would be a smart decision. Green would be an excellent guy to sign and would give us a pretty solid d corps. Hopefully Wotherspoon can show he belongs in the NHL then our d would look like.

Giordano Brodie
Russell wideman
Wotherspoon green
Engelland schlemko

That's pretty damn good depth

So do you bury Engelland (and Smid) in the minors and/or put Schlemko on waivers, give Green a ($6 x 6?) so you can play Green on the 3rd pairing?
