This wouldn't be allowed under the CBA. They consider it circumvention.
Quote:
Preamble. It is the parties' intention that there be full, accurate and timely disclosure and reporting of all revenues and financial information as required by Article 50, as well as of any and all agreements involving payments to Players, and that such disclosures and agreements be consistent with this Agreement, including but not limited to the provisions of Article 50. This
Article 26 is designed to prohibit and prevent conduct that Circumvents the terms of this Agreement, while not deterring or prohibiting conduct permitted by this Agreement, the latter conduct not being a Circumvention.
26.15 Examples of Circumvention. The following is a non-exhaustive list of activities that either constitute a Circumvention under this Article 26 or from which a Circumvention may be inferred:
(e) A Club and a Player, during the Player's active career, agree that upon the Player's retirement, he will receive a sum of money for services to be provided to the Club after retirement.

Doubt it: Oilers had to trade a body for Roy rather than claim him on waivers just because they are close to the limit on pro contracts. I doubt they'd use a pro contract spot for Gratts.
Canucks don't use guys like him.

I figured that might be the case. Maybe one of Murray's non-Flame owner friends needs a bodyguard.

The league office =/= the Flyers.
The rule is for "hey if you retire we will pay you the rest of your contract to be an ambassador for us" thus saving a contract and salary cap monies while circumventing the cap.

While I think Pronger not being retired but not counting against the cap is a farce, his new job isn't with the Club, so it doesn't fit in that provision (it might fit in others).

He's also paid by the Flyers being on the LTIR, but the Flyers get no cap relief for him or salary relief. They didn't shed his salary or contract in any way with him taking this job. So no circumvention.

Pronger, who has three seasons remaining on his contract with the Flyers that carries an annual cap hit around $4.9 million US, has not played since the 2011-12 season and has been on long term injury reserve (LTIR) since.
Reports indicate that Pronger has not retired and will continue to receive pay from the Flyers, but also that the team will not be be hit with a salary cap penalty.

Personally we should have bought him out and hired him in another position. Do we have to waive him first? We would have to say unconditional waivers for buyout right?

I think they get relief for him based on LTIR:

Sadly the game of hockey passed Big Ern by. The speed and quickness needed in today's game is incredible and McGrattan just didn't have it. Loved the guy on this team and would be thrilled to see him back in some capacity, trainer, councilor something along those lines. Although I could see him being heavily involved with the NHL's substance abuse programs which he already is.

One of the things that I also really like about Big Ern was the example he set.
Hes a massive gym rat and because of his past he doesnt go out drinking or partying after games.
So he inspired a lot of people to be more responsible with their downtime.

Per the CBA:
Quote:
A Player on a Bona Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception Conditioning Loan will continue to be listed on Injured Reserve and will not count against the Club's 23-man roster limit. The Club's Bona Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception will continue until the Conditioning Loan ends, and his Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and Bonuses will continue to count against the Club's Upper Limit and the Players' Share during such time.
|
Quote:
Once a Player is placed on the Injured Reserve List, the Club may replace said Player on its NHL Active Roster with another Player, and during such period of his designation as an Injured Reserve Player he will not count against the Club's Active Roster limit, provided, however, that the Injured Reserve Player's Player Salary and Bonuses and his replacement's Player Salary and Bonuses are each included in calculating a Club's Actual Club Salary and Averaged Club Salary, and the Players' Share, for purposes of Article 50.
|
There's also some parts in the "Salary Calculation" part of the CBA which shows to include these players as both a contract spots and towards the Upper Salary (Cap) limit.

Unfortunate but pretty much expected given the lack of playing time and other teams doing away with the designated enforcer roles (e.g. Toronto).
I'm curious whether Flames feel like they have enough team toughness or maybe need to look at players more like Ferland that can play but also adds to team toughness.

I hope he stays with the team as a mentor and trainer. Teach the team how to protect themselves, give them comedic relief, help them off the ice. He's such a good guy it would suck if he's out of the oganization entirely.

An old article about McGrattan and his helping of players with substance abuse problems:
http://www.calgarysun.com/2013/03/04...oholics-in-nhl
Quote:
Somewhere in the midst of his four years of sobriety, Brian McGrattan reached a point where helping himself simply wasn’t enough.
He wanted to help others, too.
The first beneficiary was Jordin Tootoo, who leaned heavily on McGrattan in Nashville where the two Predators teammates drew strength from one another as part of a friendship/mentorship that endures today.
But the Calgary Flames winger wanted to take his passion for helping others turn their lives around to another level.
So, he approached the NHL.
“I had a meeting with the (league’s substance abuse program’s) doctors in October and asked if I could give them a hand,” McGrattan said of one of many bold steps he’s taken since he had the realization that his life was spinning out of control because of addiction.
“I’ve been talking to Alcoholics Anonymous groups, and I go back to my treatment centre I went to and talk to the people there to tell them my story. I feel it comes to me pretty naturally. I spoke to my parents about it in the summer, and post-hockey it’s one of my biggest interests. As the years have gone on, I’ve been more vocal about it, and I feel the more I can give back and help, the more I can save lives.”
|
A good guy, I will miss him when he goes.
