Do you have an obligation to secure your internet connection? Or could you leave it open or just claim your password was hacked because it was your phone number and you didn't change it in 10 years.

What's the situation if it's a renter that caused the violation.
I got a notice on the weekend and thought it was spam at first since I have Telus at home, but then I remembered that Shaw is at my rental property and included in the condo fees so I don't charge for it.

Looks like the notices are effective, I wonder how much of that is people stopping, and how much is people moving to ways that are more difficult to measure.

The best option is to simply never enter log in info for your ISP email address. Thus way, you never get the notices and therefore remain unconcerned by any of this.

Best option is to stop stealing content. How about that?

I'll stop when copyright stops at something less than infinity.

This is a strange stance to take. Are you avoiding stealing any material that is earlier than your own desired length of time?

I have friends that received cease and desist notices for out-of-print content. How is that fair?

No, I'm copying (not stealing) anything I want. Copyright at 95-120 years is absurd. There is no balance between what is good for art and society, its all slanted towards the distributors. So they have gotten very little money from me in the last 15 years.

I tend to buy from the artist if at all possible. At least then I know they get a fair share of the money.

Now that's a bit too simplistic a response.
"stealing content" by whose definition?
I can watch network television OTA.
I can digitally record this content to watch when I want, but I am 'stealing' this same content when I watch from an online source?
Please...

Term of copyright survival is 50 years after the artist dies, not 95-120... Surely you're not suggesting that artists should lose the rights to their own works while they're still alive.

I quoted the American law which for most purposes is the relevant one.
Yes absolutely, why should their longevity be relevant? Let them lose it after 20 years. And who are we kidding, most musical works are in fact derivative.

So do you wait the 20 years you think is fair before (we'll avoid the term stealing) illegally enjoying content meant to be purchased it paid for in some other manner?
Your rationalizing here and no matter how you do it, your action isn't ethical even if your stance is (which is debatable). Either way you aren't giving the author or distributor any money. There's no ethical support there.
It's fine, it's incredibly small theft and I've done it at times when I can't find any simple way to access what I want too. Just cut the "I'm stealing ethically" crap
