I don't think it's unrealistic to have grass in Canada. It's just a cost thing. There is all sorts of genetically modified grasses that can basically grow anywhere under any condition.
Heck, there's natural grass in the Canadian Tundra. Riddle me that.

The Europeans sat out this time because they got 2011 and 2019 (France). It's kind of weird that Korea bid against France in 2019, if they had bid against Canada in 2015, they probably would have won.
|
Oh GS. Have you learned nothing about Fifa this past 2 weeks? I am sure it cost the CSA a fair bit of $ to convince Fifa to go all turf (but likely less than converting all the stadiums to grass for three weeks), and Korea was told to save their money for bribes to Fifa for another event down the road.

It's not, every CFL stadium had grass until the late 70's. But to maintain it year round was not economic for the usage factor. And replacing it every year was certainly not economic. Commenweath in Ocotober or November, before it changed 5 years ago, the grass had no blades left, and was akin to playing on cement in the CFL. And who else, that needs to play in a 20k+ stadium in this country, needs a grass field, outside of (just recently) MLS?

The CSA definitely did not have to bribe FIFA to put in turf. The fact that the bid stated it would be on turf, and that no one else bid except Zimbabwe (who later dropped out), was all that was needed.
Don't want to play on turf? Fine, you now have no bids for the Women's World Cup.

1. BMO is grass, has been for years. They've installed a heating system and light system (might be yet to be installed) to keep grass in the early and late seasons.
2. BMO just underwent a massive renovation. It's now just over 30K in capacity, and a roof is coming next year.

I agree with this. Look at how green the grass stays at the Suncor building well into December (and still sort of green in January and February) . . . . Genetically-modified grass has a purpose in Canada! Especially for sports!!

Edmonton supports its sporting events - always has. Doesn't matter what it is, they get great community buy in.
There are a fair bit of other events going on this weekend, with the pride parade getting a lot of attention as well (it's normally a pretty big and well received event). But don't kid yourself, this is a big deal here.
Surprised Kelly would do that. Disappointed, but in so many ways it is so Canadian - crapping on our own because it's expected.

The poster was saying that it isn't impossible just a matter of cost. It is a cost that is unreasonable for the CFL and a Women's World Cup at this point in time. It is, though, proving to be economic in certain situations as we are witnessing with the MLS at BMO and Saputo.

they've been doing dry runs of the intros and music all yesterday and today (I live close enough to hear).
People have been dressed in Canadian gear and marching around since early this morning. I think that the swell of community support is building quickly and if we're lucky it will peak today at the game. I can hardly wait.

"Locals aren't interested"
It should be noted though, I went out last night and the amount of people here from out of town is crazy. Tons from the west coast, many drove here, many flew in yesterday and Thursday.

Can't say I'm a fan of woman's football. But I'll watch this. I want Canada to do it. They deserve it after being cheated in the Olympics. Christine Sinclair especially deserves a World Cup.
I'd take her for Rangers

I'm not a soccer fan but I've always been able to get into women's soccer. I've found that women's soccer is much more competitive in Canada than the men's game.
I'm excited about Canada's chance of going deep in this World Cup.
I've been watching the pre game show on TSN and Commonwealth looks awesome.
