I'd like the Flames to bring Wotherspoon up and see how he fairs. Depending on how he performs, the Flames can decide if they want to bring a 5/6 guy via trade in case of injury or 3/4 guy.

Now that we've got Seto buried in the minors, and with all these injuries, I absolutely wouldn't be opposed to us taking on Semin.

Why the hell not. We need strength on the RW. We've got the space and flexibility to take such a risk. Maybe he'll be motivated to play on a Flames team that has a shot at playoffs.

Semin...really? He signed for this year + 4 more at a cap hit of 7 million.

That would be an awful move.

Truer words have not been spoken. The eastern conf is a gong show. A place where mediocre teams and mediocre players can be given the illusion of being good.

Correction, he's in his second year of the contract. 3 years after this.

I don't see enough legitimate top 6 RW potential coming up the ranks aside from Emile Poirier to warrant turning out back on the idea. If Poirier doesn't pan out, we're at least 3 years away from producing a high end RWer through the organization anyways.

So again, why not?

Mind boggling you even need to ask. Because Semin is lazy, disinterested and not producing anything? That's the last thing we need, especially at that price tag / term?

Because, at the rate this team is progressing we'll likely need that money for other people before his contract is up.

I'd only look at taking Semin if he came with a nice, high draft pick or an actually good roster player or prospect. And I dont know what I'd be comfortable parting with in exchange.

Quite frankly, Semin is a loser. Hes a skilled loser. But hes still a loser. He'll only put in enough effort to ensure that his paycheques get signed.

I dont mean that as a personal insult to Semin, but as an observation over many years. He doesnt fit the mold of this team.

He's the antithesis of everything the Flames are trying to build.

Hard working, never say die, sacrifice yourself for the team - words never used to discuss Semin. Especially Semin for $7 million dollars for the next three years. People go hog wild over Glencross alleged lack of effort... Glencross looks like Bouma in comparison to Semin.

Fair point. BUT what if you can get him working again?

Players in the past have been kick started by a change of scenery. We need more high end skill and size down the right side, that is natural to the right side. You're not going to be in the Flames' current position to pick up a player that can be that everyday. I just think it's worth considering.

And depends on how much the team will drop on bridge contracts for Monahan and Gaudreau, and a Gio extension a little down the road (still think he'll take a discount), but I think there's room there still. We're severely underspending at the moment.

change of scenery for Semin?

he was called lazy in Washington and he was called lazy in Carolina.

doubt a 3rd chance gets him going again

PETA might have issues with this.

BUT, what if you don't. No player that has the reputation he has from the only two places he's played well suddenly turn it around. If his deal was expiring? Maybe.

Even then. We're currently building the culture. Do you want that in the room?

Alright then, let's just keep rolling with undersized, converted RWs.

If we really are on the verge of playoffs, I'm sure we'll fare just fine against the big pacific teams over a 7 game series..

It's a suggestion for a possibility at reward. I'm not frothing at the mouth over the prospect of grabbing him. But fact is this team needs more size WITH skill.

^ Try to kick start a guy like Setoguchi, low risk high reward. Good attitude at least and trying to work hard, local guy, good in the room by all accounts. Try to kick start a guy like Semin, high risk high reward. Terrible attitude and already has a huge contract. It's a non starter on a young rebuilding team that's building a culture of hard work and earned never given.

Yes we need help at RW and I see where you are coming from but you are barking up the wrong tree.
