Just tell it like it is, Iginla chose the big money over a better chance of winning. Nothing to be ashamed about but that's what he did.
He chose the market rate. Can you cite some examples of players of Iginla's calibre signing $1 mil contracts?

I can only think of Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne signing bargain basement deals with the Avs to try and win a Cup together.

It didn't work.

Even when Hossa went to Detroit, it was still for 7M.

Bruins odds? 9 to 1.

I know what team I'd choose if I was 37 and wanting to win a cup.
Odds are determined by bettors....teams that have low odds have lotsa money being placed on them...teams that have high odds means the public doesn't like their chances.

Now....again he was leaving 14 million dollars (thats real money not fantasy stuff) on the table in your scenario and he was to base this decision on what a bunch of honks in Las Vegas who never played the game at the NHL level (or ANY level in many cases) think?

Seriously...this is what you believe was his best course of action?

Can't fault Iginla for signing with a team that had the best combination of probability of winning the cup and ability to pay him. Seems to make the most sense to me. I'm curious as to whether he is having second thoughts at not taking the deal the Isles were offering considering how they've looked to start the year.

And that's the whole point....there is ZERO guarantee that Boston or ANY team is in the SC finals when deals are signed on July 2....yet some believe the guy should have foregone 14 million bucks to do so.

Right, because he hasn't already been in the playoffs twice since leaving the Flames.

What a weird thing to be smug about.

Yeah, it's a weird phenomenon a poster pointed out a few pages back. It's like a bunch of posters feel like you can't cheer for the Flames and Iginla.

"I don't care about Iginla, he doesn't play for the Flames!!!!".

"I hope he fails miserably, I don't give a **** about him now that he doesn't wear the flaming C. THAT'S what I cheer for!".

"Good luck stupid Iginla, I hope you keep picking the wrong teams and never win a thing!".

And I really hate that Kariya/Selanne move - despite it being their personal poor choice. The idea behind a cap is also to somewhat maintain parity within the league. Those types of moves are like a form of circumvention to grab a cup.

Never seems to work, though, so why sweat it?

Its disrespectful, bottom line. The guy gave us 16 seasons and played at the highest possible level throughout it. First ballot hall of famer, 1000+ points, 500 + goals, always represented the team with class and dignity. Greatest player in franchise history beyond a shadow of a doubt. Gave all his best years to the team, never tried to leave when times were tough. Ask our rival fans if they would've liked to have Iginla for 16 years. I honestly don't understand why any Flames fan would wish him anything but the best for the last few seasons he's got left.

Yet any time Iginla gets mentioned, theres a vocal minority of posters that think its great to rip him. And I think its garbage.

I agree, Iginla was a class act the entire time in Calgary. I don't understand why people are bashing him now that he has moved on. Is this going to happen with Gio years down the road once he starts to decline?

who knows who is going to win the cup.... go for the dough with a team that seems to have a good chance at making the playoffs.... which at the time he signed Av's did.

Oh don't get me started on the insanity that is CP.

Iginla takes a beating, but guys like Backlund, formerly Nystrom, other low impact players are given keys to the city.

Seriously?

That's enough.
