If this is true Alberta politics are so screwed up. Smith is certainly not a leader. If this happens and she gets paid off with a cabinet posting either now or in the future, it will fuel the cynisicm that is already very apparent in this province regarding politics and politicians.

The dynasty that is the Alberta PCs have become is simply not good for the Province. Its one party rule ala-China and we have an actual democracy, at least in theory. I guess we have no one to blame but ourselves.

With apologies to Elton John and Norma Jean

Goodbye Danielle Smith
Though we never knew you at all
You had the audacity to premier yourself
While those around you walked
They walked out of your party
And they mocked you in your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you ashamed of your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a premier in the waiting
Never knowing what party to cling to
When the trouble set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just too smart
Your party burned out long before
Your premiership ever did

Raj is in line for a promotion by doing nothing. And the opposition party would then have a whopping 5 seats.

"Chairman Prentice" has kind of a nice ring to it.

Or, perhaps, the fact that every other party has been complete garbage for the most part?

Can't fault the population when the Liberals and NDP have been a joke for decades, and Wildrose, ultimately, wasn't a great deal better.

None of the actors in this #wrp drama are talking tonight. Everything is coming from peripheral players. There are no hard facts. #ableg

Not to add fuel to rumours, but Saskiw's facebook post makes no mention of the WildRose in it. Kind of a big omission.

Which is weird. If none of it was true, why wouldn't they be all over denying the hell out of it? Silence can speak volumes, as the saying goes.

Granted, it's a very weird situation, if it's true.

As much as Redford was a train wreck (and I say that having defended her in the past), I'm glad the Wildrose didn't get in. It's been a little over two years and this sort of self destruction is insanity. Heck, it's been less than two months since the last by-election and while they made some massive errors, there is no reason to have such a meltdown.

Crazy times.

Global News is now reporting that Prentice has offered seats to WRP members to cross. Danielle Smith is behind this and her party is going to vote tomorrow on crossing the floor.

Quote:
EDMONTON – Alberta’s opposition Wildrose caucus is expected to meet Tuesday to discuss merging with Premier Jim Prentice’s Progressive Conservatives, according to sources.

“You may see the entire Wildrose caucus cross the floor,” former Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin told Global News. Anglin now sits as an independent for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre and believes the negotiations have been going on for the past week.

If merger talks fail, there may be four or more defections to the Tory team, said one source.

Yep. Time for a real opposition to (put egos aside) come together and provide a real alternative (big tent - centrist). If not, we're all screwed in an actual one party state type situation. I don't like Wildrose, but at least they are an opposition.

Silly "fantasy" but there's this small part of me that would like to see Prentice allow every WRP MLA to cross but tell Danielle no thanks, if you want to go for a walk, the door is over there.

Jeff Callaway, a former party president and current vice-president of fundraising for Wildrose, said in an interview Monday that MLAs Rob Anderson and Shayne Saskiw are recruiting all members of the Wildrose caucus to join Jim Prentice’s Progressive Conservatives.

Callaway said the two pivotal members of the caucus have an offer letter negotiated with the PCs that promises protected Tory nominations in the next provincial election for the Wildrose defectors.

The floor-crossing is being sold by the MLAs as essentially a merger between the PCs and the official Opposition party, but the Wildrose party executive is firmly against what would amount to a “takeover,” he said.

“This is being characterized by Saskiw and Anderson as a unification of the conservatives, which is entirely false,” said Callaway.
Quote:
As for the leader, Callaway said he did not know Smith’s position on possibly going to the PCs herself.

“Would she cross the floor, say? She is not unaware of these discussions by any stretch,” he said.

Callaway said the contents of the offer letter had been read to him by an MLA, and other MLAs had confirmed the situation to him.

“I believe basically the threat is if you don’t come now, there will be a spring election and we will just wipe you out,” he said.
Quote:
Anglin said Monday he had been told that on the weekend Smith herself was pitching the idea to MLAs of the whole caucus crossing the floor.

“At this point in time, nothing would surprise me,” Anglin said.

“I think they’re all in survival mode. I think they’re trying to figure out their futures and I know many of them prefer to get re-elected versus run against Prentice.”

Anglin said he understands Wildrose MLAs are prepared to vote on the offer Tuesday.
