I wonder if I have been too hard on Sliver in the past. As a fan of the arts, I gotta give him major credit.
Just looking at the OP alone (never mind Sliver's dream of being an advice columnist, his 'debate' with people who disagree with him, his thread/post history), this is some performance art level trolling. Really remarkable stuff. So concise, yet so effective.
If Sliver can troll the world with his 'no nonsense advice colum' like he trolls CP, he will be a zillionaire phenomenon in no time.

I'm always amazed when people view Sliver's posts as anything other than a thinly-veiled attempt to get a rise out of people.

Pillow case/tail pipe treatment? Its OK to treat animals like that? At least do what farmers do and put a quick bullet in their heads to end them quickly. I assume you're talking about suffocating a cat? Does any sane person think that is a humane thing to do?

Not only am I constantly surprised at the number of serious answers he gets, how in the hell does he pass the smell test from the powers that be, time after time? I guess that's a testament to the dedication to his craft that he can be so blatant yet must be walking a fine enough line that he survives.
Kudos Dess, Kudos.

I think the historical trend here appears to be that once the cat's grow past the kitten stage they lose their appeal and thus appear to suffer from the effects of neglect and lack of stimulation. Correct?
The obvious solution this time around would be to get two cats. That way they can keep each other stimulated when they become boring thus negating the aforementioned effects. Three would be even better.

Felt good about myself today til I read this thread, found out I am a dispicable human being. I, well, mostly my wife have gotten rid of a couple cats and a dog because of several reasons which would make a lot of people upset, I don't think you should expend all resources keeping sick or stupid animals alive. They are not humans, they are animals, they get the crappy end of the stick. I'm not spending 2000 on a dog that is half brain dead when my kids need winter clothes. And if a cat won't stop peeing on my kids bed, see ya!
People who treat their animals better than other human beings make me lose faith in humanity more than someone who euthanizes an animal for less than perfect reasons.
And please don't confuse me as someone who gets a pet cause they are cute and just needles them when they lose the cute factor. But the guilt trip I got taking my dog in made me want to tell the vet to stuff it.

I have a buddy who had a sick puppy. The vet bill was apparently going to be sky high. One day my friend put the puppy in a burlap sack and drowned it in the bathtub. Now, I'm no pet guy but that changed how I looked at him after that. We don't talk much anymore.

Don't feel bad about yourself. The white knights will obviously be super vocal in a thread like this, but most people would have a very low tolerance level for a pet that was making their life difficult, ruining their property, etc. Most normal people don't get a pet with the thought that they'll keep it its entire life no matter what.
Have you ever been in a house where they had an incontinent animal? It smells foul and I just imagine there are germs everywhere. I had a buddy buy one of these houses and they had to rip out the sub floor - changing the carpet and underlay wasn't sufficient to remove the odor. The former owner of the house who let their cat piss everywhere was a complete effing nut. I base that opinion on nothing other than the fact that she let this cat go to the bathroom in her house, on the floor (and presumably the furniture), for an extended period of time.
Pets can enrich your life, but if they start taking from you more than they give (in terms of companionship, motivation to walk, love, whatever), you're not a terrible person to look for other alternatives. Ideally, you will re-home it. Failing that, and if they are causing you financial or emotional stress, then the SPCA is a good, last-ditch option.
There are way more animals out there than people who want them. If you provide a good home for a nice chunk of the animal's life, then you've done more for it than a lot of pets get. I think you should feel good about all that you gave those animals.

Not to mention cats are originally from space, and therefor we should be careful not to anger them.

I'll tell you my secret. I'm being honest.
The fourth cat thing - my wife and I were literally talking about this two weeks ago. We don't want an animal in our home (we're pretty clean people), but we were going to get one and let it live in the garage - almost like a farm/barn cat. It's a heated garage so it would be comfortable. Where the plan fell apart is we'd have to leash it to one of the shelves during the day so when we came back at night it wouldn't run out the big door when the cars returned home. Obviously that would be a pretty lame life for the cat and potentially risky with the leash, so we abandoned the plan. But as for just spit balling the thought of it, we were pretty excited for an hour or two.
The three cats I found better homes for? 100% true.
I think if you're trolling, you're being dishonest. I'm always honest and therefore not a troll; however, I do concede that I like these conversations because they can get pretty lively. But again, it's a genuine conversation from my end, so I don't think calling it a troll job is fair.

If you don't have money for winter clothes for your kids plus a spare $2000 if something happens to your dog, you shouldn't get a dog.
Pets, as with kids, are financial commitments. Sounds like you couldn't afford both and your dog paid the price.

Dude face it, you dont know how to train animals. When you realize you have failed, you pawn off your mistakes on other people who attempt to rehabilitate the animal from your abuse. DO NOT get another animal, just continue screwing up your own family. Dont get another animal messed up in your obvious mental problems.

Why do you guys keep getting pets when you know your not going to put in the effort to properly train and emotionally bond with them? You sound psychotic.
I'd love to be able to enjoy the perks of having a pet, but I realistically know I'm not in a place in life where I can provide proper care, so guess what? I don't have a pet. Did you know that was an option? Give it a try!
