Are they unable to quit their jobs? Nobody forced to work those days at all. they choose those jobs which have weekend hours, many choose those jobs because of weekend hours.

If everyone could have the jobs they wanted nobody would work in the retail industry.
Many would like to have a holiday off to spend with family.

If everyone could have the jobs they wanted I wouldn't work M-F, should we close down businesses to let people like me spend time with my family.
I have worked retail and other jobs on weekends. Each time I was happy for the opportunity to work those hours since it was only time I was available.
Closing down businesses and negatively impacting a large number of people's lives because of some pie in the sky idea that it is preventing people from spending family time seems like a waste.
There are pros and cons to both, but having experienced both, I miss the days when most things were closed on holidays and Sundays. Maybe I am just being nostalgic, but days without society being focuses on consumerism had a lot of benefits that I think it is unfortunate that the younger generation will never understand. With Remembrance Day in particular, it would be nice if people got to reflect and think about history without having to worry about going to work. The way some people talk about it, you would think that people used to starve in the streets not being able to shop 365 days a year.

In Ottawa I believe federal civil servants are the ONLY people that get Remembrance Day off. I have had to work it while many of the government offices downtown have been empty. That would lead me to believe that federal civil servants should get it off everywhere.
The meager wages are likely preferred to the no wages they would get without it.
And what are the crappy work conditions? Walmart like decent environment to work and many days I would prefer working there than outside in -40 in Northern alberta.
My job at EB Games was excellent while I was in school -- I worked every Sunday and grabbed stat holidays whenever I could for the extra pay.
We got some mixed reactions when Call of Duty: World at War came out on Remembrance Day. We were one of the only stores in the city to actually get it in on time.

Maybe you could explain why the industry as a whole is having to hire TFW to fill positions Canadians don't want?
I am not sure why that is relevant but doesn't that show that people aren't being forced to work on Sunday's if they would rather spend time with their families? If they were we wouldn't need TFW.
And I am still not sure why retail isn't an awesome job means stores shouldn't be open Sunday.

You wanted to know what the crappy working conditions were.
I'm talking about one day of the year (Rememberance Day) that businesses should be closed.
It should absolutely be a National holiday, and schools should spend the week before educating students on the realities of WWI.
I recently watched Apocalypse: WWI, which really opened my eyes to the depth of sacrifice and suffering faced by the soldiers. As a result, this Remembrance Day will be more than a day off work.
I haven't watched it, but WWI In Color is available on YouTube, and may be a good place for anyone not familiar with the War to gain an appreciation.
