I wouldn't sign anyone or do anything until at least Christmas. By then we should mostly know what we have. If we're in the mix for a playoff spot still by then, then by jove extend the coach.

After a decade of the coaching roller coaster for us, I think Hartley is the right guy. Teams of the past had no comeback value what so ever, we are down 3-0 by the 2nd was an automatic signal to turn off the tv. What with Hartley has been able to do with this group of kids is amazing to watch, we've been able to stay close to striking range of every game.

Honestly, who else is out there to be most suitable for the Flames? Hartley is the only guy I feel confident in our rebuild.

Depends what your goals are.

Bob came here to a veteran team with the likes of Iggy Tang Cammy Bouw Gio Brodie Kipper and the list goes on. He could not motivate that team to play at all. Should lead one to believe he is not good at coaching veteran players. As in he can not motivate veteran players to play at a high level.

So we dumped alot of the vets and the remaining vets play like?????? I consider Gio a vet but a totally different vet based off how he entered the league. Gio is a freak! Yet if you exclude him who amongst the vets shows up? I consider a vet 25 or older.

Do our young guys bust their butts? You bet they do. Its a combination of desire to stick with the big club and also coaching. I will give Hartley credit there. A young guy has to be at least twice as good as a vet to make this team. Fair? No, but it does motivate.

I do hate how Hartley comes up with his lines. Us fans are dumb but when we see something so obvious and the coach does not for several games I question him alot. Top six forwards should play with top six forwards. When you find chemistry you leave the players together.
Few games back he broke up Gio and Brodie. Cost us 2 quick goals against. One of the best tandems in the league and he breaks them up. Dont fix what is not broken!!!

Never the less I would extent Hartley for another year or two. I think he is a terrible coach with veteran players but our team is young and only going to get younger next year. Its in the 2 -3 year time frame when we start signing some veteran FA's to truly try to contend, thats when I want him gone. Who knows though, in 2 years time my opinion may change. My opinion may change by the end of the season too!

Maybe the Flames have offered the contract, but Hartley is waiting to see how the season goes. He might get better offers in the summer.

Wideman, Hudler, Hiller and Gio are just a few of the vets having a horrible season under Bob

Take out Gio cause he is a freak of nature lol!

Wideman has scored some goals. I like Wideman too, but its early.
Hudler I like too but disappears a lot. Hiller was a FA, playing well, but goalies are different. Hard to talk about effort with a goalie. Ramo has been good too but I don't think Hartley has anything to do with the goalies. You play the hot guy!

Lets talk about the vets not performing? Stajan, Glencross, Jones, Setoguchi, Bollig, Engelland, Smid. You can include Wideman too, sure he has some goals but his start of the season was horrific defensively.

Beyond Gio no vet has looked good on a regular basis.

If I was you I would of used Raymond as an argument. FA signing.

Again its just my opinion, my belief. Lots of stuff to back it up. Doesn't make me right though.

Why is Hartley playing Setoguchi so much? I understand giving a vet a chance and all.

Default Why haven't the Flames offered Hartley a contract extension yet?

Throw Raymond on the list. Didn't think of him as he is injured.

Look at the names and be honest with yourself - other than Stajan, is ANYONE on that list expected to be anything more than a stopgap?
Team is playing well, Hartley gets credit for this.
/discussion, imo

Edit: Seto thing bothers me as well. Seeing him out there with JH on that 4 on 3 hurt my brain

I think Stajan isn't performing well because he got injured game. Aside from that, I think he's done well under Hartley.

Bollig had a good start but he's been crap lately. Wideman has been good, even defensively lately (until the third period today).

I think Setguchi has been OK in the last 2-3 games.

You've got me on Glencross.

Why? If he can milk this performance out of the Flames he could be in line for a major pay day from a team with more talent looking to improve. There could be a bidding war for his services come summer. I'm not sure why you think Hartley should just take any offer the Flames make. That would be the dumb thing to do.

Or the Flames could come back down to earth and be in the bottom 10 at the end of the season. All of sudden Hartley might be having problems finding a job. If he was offered a reasonable contract he would have signed by now.

Agreed. If Burkie/BT wanted him back, Hartley would be signed by now. Wouldn't be surprised if Flames Mgm waiting to see what unfolds with Carlyle. Burke's type of coach

I said this a year ago and I'll stick to it. When the Flames make the playoffs and become a contender, a lot of their success is going to be from what Hartley has done these last 2 1/2 seasons. Hartley though will not get the credit because it will be a new coach at the helm when we make it. Coaches during rebuilds rarely ever survive the rebuild, in the end he has no tangible results with wins, so unless the flames make it this year you will see a new coach next year.

Not sure if this article has been already linked but just in case, here's Duhatschek's take.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...ticle21416331/

Myself, I think Hartley is enjoying his job and the enthusiasm rubs off on the team. I hope he re-signs for another 3 years. One option I see for him is if Babcock moves on, Detroit may want him.
