I believe they own him until he's 31 and can then move into UFA status.

Being an RFA, he could negotiate with other teams. but the team signing him would have to pay Edmonton I believe money and/or draft picks.

He'll probably be a piece in a trade at some point I'm sure.

Something about making a qualifying offer to retain rights for 4 years?

Frik, I feel bad about Horak's situation.

He should be UFA eligible at 27, which is still four more seasons (including this year) away.

Poor Horak. Hope the Oilers trade his rights so he'll come back to NA.

I still think of this Horak photo after the trade.

He's already clicking his heels together and saying "There's no place like home" in this photo. I liked Horak and really hope things work out for him..... with another team of course.

Jonathan Willis;
Percentage invented fleece
Won't keep your butt warm.

Edmonton journal
Pays basement dweller for ink
Fleecing happens there.

I read that article today and I had no idea what the guy was on about. Anyone who uses stats knows that they have to have proper reference points.

This thread has to go into our e=ng thread because Jonathan Willis epitomises no good, and that's without the flip flopping.

I posted this in another thread regarding the trade but Smid had played a chunk of games for the Flames (67 and counting IIRC). The fact the Flames got a roster player who is still playing compared to 2 players who at this stage look like they won't hit 25 games combined in an Oiler jersey doesn't exactly help their case for a win.

At the end of the day it is about asset management (something the oilers know little about). Flames traded a player that was being bumped down our depth charts (Ortio passed him and Gillies was in coming down the pipe). What they don't understand is this was a trade from a position of strength because we successfully developed (another concept foreign to the oilers) players.

Edmonton fleeced Calgary In the Smid trade that is laughable Greasers, laughable.
They dumped Smid for next to nothing. He would still be in their top 4 with their current D roster.

The argument though was basically that we got saddled with three more years at 3.5M of a terrible defenseman. He's right to some extent, as that's too much for laddy (even though that was "a hometown discount" according to Willis himself just before the article). The thing is though, it doesn't matter to the flames as we have the space. In fact, one could argue that the Flames were better off with the higher cap hit to reach the floor

I seriously have to ask about this guy's credentials. Are the Oilers partners with the Journal or something? This article wouldn't come off any worse if it came from a lunatic fan at HF.

It's a blog, not an edited article, so the standards are much lower for logic

Lower standards? Considering how flawed the logic of the article is I can only come to the conclusion that there are no standards for blogs published by the Journal.

Lol. Totally true. And after reading it in full just now, it's not even in their blog section like he usually is

That's just terrible

Read the thread title as "Oiler's Fleeced in Smid Trade" and thought it was old news.
I am not going follow and read the link. Consensus seems to agree it's idiotic.

Flames traded a lotto ticket (Brossoit) for an established NHL player. Horak was included as an added value, but that's gone. Only way Oil could win this trade now is if said lotto wins big. Possible, but not likely.

I do feel bad for Horak. He looks so very unimpressed in that photo.

I know he isn't going to be a great, great player for the Flames but I think he is going to gradually pick up his game up to Christmas....the was a serious mouth carnage curveball he got hit with....right in the chicklets....at the worst time.

Smid isn't the most gifted defenseman but by my observations he's chippy and always one of the first guy to jump in to skirmishes and stick up for the goaltender and other players. There is value to players that can take a regular shift and be a top shelf teammate.

Bottom line is that the trade has helped us and benefited us. Which is why that write up is garbage.

Even the commenters (who I imagine are Oil fans) thought it was laughable.

It was a weird thing to blog about as well. Of all the current issues for the Oilers, whether they won a trade a year ago for a 3rd pairing defenceman where they got a couple of prospects who havent played for them yet, isn't exactly a hot topic.

Was it because the anniversary is in a few days? If so, jeebus, think harder for a topic.
