I don't think the Flames played how they can against the Caps. They looked really disjointed.
I don't buy the "Caps are a more talented team playing well, there's nothing you can do against that" argument. That's plain silly to say in this instance. The Flames weren't playing near their best. The Caps got the breaks early on (when the Flames had the better of the play) then aggressively pursued our guys in the neutral zone while we couldn't get anything started offensively. The third period was our worst, which has been a rarity this year. If we were on our game, it would've been much closer. Also Ramo let in a bad goal early in the third. On other night's that would've been a 2-2 game decided in OT or SO.

I watched that game closely and the impression I got was we were playing our best against a bigger, more talented team. I believe our better than expected start was greatly enhanced by superior goaltending, and the relative rustiness of the better teams. As the season progresses, I think the improvement in the better teams will outpace the Flames, and we will probably drop back in the standings, as a result.

And the Flames don't have room for improvement?
Saturday certainly was NOT their best effort, not even close.

I was at the game and thought the flames played well but were out classed by a more talented team.
There are lots of those in the NHL get used to it.

I was at the game and I thought the Flames played terribly (though not from a lack of effort).
Their breakout was atrocious. No, that's wrong - their breakout was non-existent because the forwards were at the far blue-line looking for the bomb pass all night long. Zero puck support.
Also, their overall passing was as bad as I have ever seen it.
Finally, they fell behind based on two individual plays that really didn't reflect the flow of the game. And once they were behind, the Caps played a really good, shut-down trap, leaving the Flames and their 150 ft passes squarely in no man's land.
The Flames beat themselves in that game.

But yes, watching the games, i think it's pretty clear that the team doesn't generate much offensively. In their first 10 games, they have scored 1 goal in 5 of those games.
Of the 2 games they have scored more than 2 goals, 1 was against the oilers who didn't know how to play defense at the time (averaging a touchdown a game during that chunk of games) and the carolina hurricanes who have yet to win a game this season.
All i'm saying is the team looks pretty lack lustre offensively, and the talent level on the roster is only slightly less than last season (losing cammalleri, compensated by some of the incoming players). Guys like hudler, backlund, monahan, glencross have had relatively quiet years with regards to the offensive zone time and scoring.
Don't see the team generating a lot of chances and just missing those opportunities, would be fine with that. Just seems entering the zone, possessing the puck and creating plays off the cycle hasn't presented itself much so far this short season.

They had a ton of chances last night, but scored only 1 against Price. They have more goals per game than last year (which is what you were comparing them to). No one is saying they are a great offensive team. They just are not worse than last year.

They couldn't have been outclassed by much if it went to the shoot out.

It had to do with the comment about them being worse offensively than last year.

So some are claiming (including the guy who "watched very closely") that they put out their best effort against the Caps, but were just out classed. You're telling me that effort was as good as the one against the Habs yesterday? Lol. Not even close.

No - I'm not saying that. I'm saying they're not more offensively challenged than last year in general, and I was using last night as an example of them generating lots of chances.
