Don't worry, everyone else is harshly judging your improper use of an apostrophe in the possessive form of "its".

Both of my kids are in high school and they are taught to double space after a period. They are in a paperless school, so each student has a macbook pro and they do everything via laptop.

Regardless. It creates more of a break between sentences IMO and is easier to read. Was taught to use 2 and still do and will continue to do so.

Periods indicate the end of a sentence. I don't need to provide any additional visual cues to the reader that the sentence is complete.

Point taken. I wrote quickly and without due care.

Note that following each of your posts, the words, 'Turn up the good, turn down the suck!', clearly require a second exclamation point to be correct. Also, your fly is down.

I think you mean "irregardless".

Anyway, I actually don't care and probably wouldn't even notice. I don't notice, and obviously some people still double-space, so "probably" has nothing to do with it.

I was taught to double-space back in the day, but I gave it up when I (ironically?) was told by an older gent that it's not how it's done in the industry (the lying/advertising industry) we were working in then.

For me, the period does enough to break up sentences. Either way, I think it is cool that people actually care enough about this to discuss it, regardless of preference. The internet is making us dumb, and kind of ruining the way we communicate, u no?

A lot of hyperbole being thrown around. Do people honestly have trouble reading paragraphs with single spaces after periods? Because virtually any text you've ever read in a web browser is formatted that way automatically. I'd assume the same is true for most printed text in the last couple of decades as well.

On the other hand though, I don't even think I'd notice double spacing after a period in normal reading, so I can't fathom anyone being bothered by someone else doing it. Reading justified text must be a real nightmare for some people then, what with all those different sized spaces between words and letters.

And having done a double space when I was taught as a kid, the extra time or effort is completely negligible. You can double tap a space bar just as fast as a single tap. Switching to a single space years ago did nothing to speed up my typing.

Back of the roll. That's crazy. Everyone knows front with a hotel style pointy fold is correct.

"who does care about any grammar rule", i

think. if its wrong it doesnt matter every

one will just need to get over it; though will

they?

No study has shown that double spacing after a sentence increases readability. If that's your opinion that's fine, but it isn't scientifically supported. It is worth noting that when one double spaces after a sentence it can slow down the reader without improving comprehension. Thus, it's more likely negative than it is positive.

Regardless, they're just rules. It's just a standard. If you don't follow the rules or the standard, that's fine. I don't think anyone here is suggesting you can't. The only true negative that comes from it is that people who are aware of the standard will view your writing and know you aren't aware of the standard.

Doing it for work isn't any reason to do it anywhere else. I have to double space lines when I hand in a paper but I don't double space when I'm typing here.

My wife uses double spaced for work, but she's of the ability not to double space after a sentence if she's texting me.

I do like that some people call anyone who adheres to the standard a grammar nazi, while being steadfast in the incorrect usage of grammar. Shall we call them grammar anarchists?

I was taught double space, and I find it preferable aesthetically. Most modern software auto-corrects for it, however. Notably, however, Twitter does not. About the only time I consciously avoid double spacing is when I hit the 140 character limit.

I remember being taught double spaces in All the Write Type. I used to enjoy the double spaces becuase I was a slower typer, and mashing that spacebar twice sped up my typing speed (at least it sure felt that way).

Most cat owners know that toilet paper hangs from the back of the roll.

Or else.

Well I'll be damned, I just grabbed one of our flying manuals and all the text is double spaced between sentences. These manuals were written by BAE in proper English so I guess double space wins.

I'll never read a paragraph the same again.

My formal education ended in 2001. Up to that point, I had heard nothing about this single-space replacing the double-space after a period.

That said, I was so focused in my studies that it wasn't until just after I graduated from university that I became aware that Nunavut had formed as a territory, so its possible that something happened in the world of typesetting that I missed.

I double space after my sentences. I'm also very happy that when I text I just double space after I'm done a sentence and it creates a period for me! Perfect!
