We have a cup from '89, how many Backlund types did we have on that team? What advanced stat will tell me that he won't go into the corners (unless vs. a Sedin Sister etc.) Won't finish a check and likewise.
4) You said you wouldn't go advanced stats, but then you brought up QofC and starts. I've made light of this on several threads, but why don't the advance stat guys - like yourself, bring us names of comparison. I just want to hear from one of you, that yes, he was better that J Toews, Sid Crosby, J Williams etc.

Wow, this sums it up. So because he is not an elite player in the league - a Benn, Toews, Crosby.. or.. Williams(?? funny Williams is listed with the others here), then that means Backlund sucks and should be replaced.
I am assuming then, that anyone on the Flames who is not a bona fide superstar be replaced with one. I totally understand where you are coming from.
Yes, I did bring up SOME advanced stats, but I am glad I did. At least you acknowledged those. What about the regular stats I brought up? Not a single rebuttal from those.
Seriously, you do have all the answers. The Flames should ONLY be including superstars on their roster. Not good players. Not great players. Not top line players or top pairing defencemen, but outright superstars.
Ovie - Crosby - Malkin
Benn - Toews - Williams (?? lol)
Marleau - Thornton - ?
? - MacKinnon - ?
Weber - Subban
Keith - ?
? - ?
Price
Rask
I will need you to fill in the blanks for me. Getting difficult to decide between players.

Ok, which players was Backlund better than? In what way? Scoring? Just go to nhl.com/stats and order the list last season according to points, or goals if that is what you prefer. The guys ahead of where Backlund is ranked would be 'better', the guys below him would be worse, and the guys with the same amount of points would be tied. Sounds simple enough to do, right?
For other metrics, you tell me what you consider better. Number of hits? Speed? Shutdown ability? Faceoff? Fighting? Leadership? IQ?
This article shows that Backlund is a very, very good defensive forward. I am not sure what kind of team you expect, but I should hope high-end defensive forwards that can play and shut-down (and even out-produce, as Backlund has shown) against top lines in the NHL are so very important to a winning team. No?
